Re-install windshield… :(

So, I am at tge point now where I was going to reinstall the glass. Last night a friend and I got the rear glass put in place, quite easily…

then we spent almost three hours putting the rubber seal on the windshield, and then tried to install it… we got stuck with it about 1/3 of the way in, and removed it again.

it seemed to sit almost 1” to high up and wouldn’t clear the drip rail… does anyone have any good ideas on how to install it, other than lots of force?

It appears that your windshield seal is for the stainless trim. Do you have the trim? If so, I'm not sure you'll be able to install it once the window is in. Be prepared to spend another few hours putting the trim in before the install - i was working by myself and was ready to smash the window.

I had helper to rope it in. We had the rope ends at the bottom and set the gasket over the flange at the bottom. As the ropes were pulled to the side we were able to push the windshield down to get it to clear the drip rail. I didn't have the drip rail trim installed but I think it would have cleared either way. We then pulled the rope ends up the side and kept pushing in as we went. By the time we got to the upper corners the windshield was where it needed to be.

If you have the stainless trim it needs to go on before you install the glass. Use masking tape to hold the seal tight to the glass be sure and install your pull rope first. Put a bead of 3M 8509 in the glass channel and a bead around the corner of the pinch weld.
Get both bottom corners started first then the top corners, if possible, this will center the glass. . I use Castrol Red Rubber grease on the rope to slick it up. Start pulling at the bottom center and work around evenly.

I do have the stainless steel trim, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to install it into the rubber seal without just ripping the seal off of the glass. I am familiar with roping in windows, but never on a windshield this massive...

These may help. if you don't install it first, it will never go in once the window is installed -

Top first. I had a glass company do mine. New seal insalled onto the glass, then trim installed onto the seal, then they used the rope method, but did the top first. It was the only way to clear the drip rail. Also? The reason I hired the glass company to do it, was because most of the videos I watched ended up with the recommedation of, "Hire it done". The company did my back glass and winsheild in about an hour and a half. Well worth paying for that labor. All in, with a NEW windsheild, and reusing the back glass I paid $500 labor and glass included, using seals that I had purchased.

Top First?! That's the first time I've heard that... are you sure, because all the videos I've watched do it bottom first, and it seems to clear "fine" with a lot of work...

Top first!! That sounds like an exercise in futility. You want to feel bad. Watch a Ford assembly line video from the 60's or 70's three guys could put in a windshield and back glass in 2 minutes. They did the bottom first.
Naturally if you are doing a couple of hundred a day you get pretty good at it.

My wife and I installed one in my truck 20 years ago. Tried bottom first with nothing but frustration to show for it, then decided to try top down and it worked - rope method. but then things always go better when she is around. Still a pain, but worked. No Chrome because mine was damaged, might make a difference in how easy it is to install. Just looked at it outside and it looks like it is time for a new gasket. Here we go again, but with grey hair now.

Were you using new glass or original? When the guys removed mine, they were being really careful, and even with the gasket cut away, it cracked when they removed it. There was a chip way at the top and it was a just weak enough spot that it let go. One crack from top to bottom. I'm sorry yours broke! That sucks.
My glass guys tried bottom first and it wouldnt clear the drip rail. Top first worked for em.

Positive. Father and son, owners of the company did it. They like to do the classic vehicle calls themselves.

Well, I’ve ordered a new windshield for $500, it’ll be here in about a month. Tomorrow I am going to contact a local company to see what they might charge to install it. It sucks, but oh well, it’s just money…
