DEF usage

DEF usage
I have a 2016 F350 6.7 and tow an 11,000 5th wheel. I always try to maintain the DEF level above the half way level and when I begin a trip I start with a full tank. I think it is 5 gallons. So, I go on a trip down the coast with many hills but nothing too extreme, and after 2,000 miles, I get a message saying I have 500 miles before DEF is empty. So I fill it up and it only takes approx. 2.5 gallons. Does this sound right? I think it should be closer to 4 or 4.5 gallons of almost empty. Anyone else have this issue?

Ther system is kind of funny. I wait till I got the message 500 miles till limp but the last time I just added a box which should have been fine but the system just reset the millage back to 500 miles. It's the dumbest thing. I finely bought another box to fill it and it took all but about 1/2 gallon. I would just put a box in the truck and when you get to about 100 miles on the counter add the box. Its stupid because the newer 17's have a 7 gallon tank so it will take 2 full boxes when you get the 500 miles. Nothing in our systems seem right. Some guys top it off all the time with no issues. I don't do that because it never takes a whole box when it says under 1/2. I don't even look at the gauge any more because it's not accurate. I hate leaving DEF in the box.

If it was really at the 500 mile limit, it would take at least 4 gallons. I have a 16 and have never had an issue with this system. That is goofy. Hopefully it works itself out. I just posted something in my truck thread about this -- I daily drive my truck, no towing, so it uses a lot less than your truck pulling a load.
Maybe a sensor is jammed with crystals so who knows?

let it get down to <200 to empty then do a complete fill.
Just take 5 gallons with you if needed or stop by wally world.
System will be less confused if you let it get down and then do complete fills.
