1972 F250 issues

Mornin lads,

I picked up a 72 F250 with a 300 6 and an automatic

Having some minor issues.

1. I’ve got no brake lights, but the turn signals are working. I’m thinking brake switch?

2. The wipers quit on me, I seem to have power past the switch.

3. the previous owner decided to throw a fuel cell in a job box in the back. I’d like to put it back to an original in cab tank. Just as not to have to move fillers etc. How do I know if I need the emissions or non emissions tank?

See pic below

Following along. My 71 has front flashers but not rear and no brake lights so I'm in a similar boat.

My 72 f250 4x4 has the non EEC tank and was built in the San Jose plant. I dont know of the criteria that would decide which was which though.

To test the wiper motor . Be sure that you have power going to the wiper motor from the switch. If you do have power from the switch AND the wires at the wiper motor are not broken (they can get chopped by the wiper arms) then the wiper motor is bad.

Only 1970/72 F100's came with the Evaporative Emission System (Evap/Em). Was required in sold new in California vehicles (Passenger Cars, Bronco, E/F100), possibly other states as well.

EEC has NOTHING to do with it! This refers to the Electronic Engine Control system (onboard computer) first installed in 1979 LTD/Gran Marquis 351W sold new in CA

The evap/em tank would take a non-vented cap and have an extra tube coming out of it. This is a vent tube that eventually ends at a vapor storage cannister under the hood attached to the right frame rail. Does your existing in-cab tank have this vent tube? If no tank, is there an extra vent tube in the cab going forward?

For the rear light problem...There are grounds for the rear lights behind the housings. Check those. Behind the Driver's side housing are the connections for the lisence plate lights too. Make sure the grounds are cleaned up well and I bet you'll get lights.

Seems I had a similar problem with brake lights years ago. IIRC, I traced it down to a connection in the turn signal switch in the steering column. IIRC I had to tighten a brass rivet in the mechanism that was not making contact. This is all depending on my memory which has been failing me recently, but I wouldn't overlook it. Check your wiring diagrams to confirm my memory.

Ok I put in a new turn signal switch and brake switch (both no longer functional after testing) and I have brake lights and turn signals. I did t have turn signals at first but I pushed around the fuse holder and they started to work too.

I also found that the plug on the firewall in the engine bay was unplugged.

Short story is test and replace the switches and make sure they are plugged in.

So I figured the light issue out, I had previously checked the fuses and all looked good. Went to pull the brake light fuse out and turns out the fuse holder was completely rotten. So I by passed that and have brake lights now. I think I’m going to put a new harness in the truck. As for the fuel tank I’ve found a tank that should fit in the back of the frame. Thanks for the help everyone. I’ll look into testing the wiper motor this weekend.
