Originally posted by carpe_diem Earlier, I considered myself a conservative. I liked Pat Buchanan, Rush Limbaugh and basically the rest of the conservative contingent on the political scene. I was, and still am, anti-abortion, pro-second amendment rights, against trade with commie countries et cetera.
Now after hanging out with that crowd for the last 10 years, it has occured to me that I don't really identify with them very much, and that I don't really believe in their de facto agenda. By the very definition of the term, conservatives want to "conserve" status quo. They are status quo, and no matter how much National Right to Life et al, claims to hate "pro-choice", they are in fact a part of the problem. Their methods are ineffective. Their understanding of the problem is shallow, incomplete and lacking depth and scope. The same can be said of the NRA and other "conservative" groups.
I think what I am trying to say is that conservatives have never been a catalyst of change in the 20th century. Ultimately, they support status quo, and prefer things just the way they are now.
I am just as deeply disappointed with the "Religious Right". It, as a movement, is neutralized because I think when all is said and done, they are not effective and they don't manifest their mission here on earth. Jesus this and Jesus that while the world falls apart.
No, the real progress since the beginning of time has been caused by Liberals. They are unrestricted by conventional thinking methods, they don't think inside the box. If any progress will occur in our society, it will come from Liberals. They don't believe in God, at least not in the same way that "Christians" do. They don't wait for God to save them, they save themselves.
Conservatism is a dead-end and stagnation. If you like progressive taxation, Roe vs. Wade, gun control, a zillion foreign wars, just keep voting Republican.
There are of course many flavors of Liberalism. Current liberalism isn't liberalism. It is radical leftism and really on the same side of the spectrum as conservatives. Classical liberalism of 18th century would put one in the right-wing section without losing one's potential for change. All liberalism causes change, but certainly no all of it is good.
You are, as unfortunate as it sounds, Correct. I do not consider myself conservative or liberal, democrat or republican, I am an independent pragmatist, And SuperMan.
right wing liberal? no offense but it is kinda like a bi-sexual. not sure which way.. i think the new term for it is "moderate" thats what ol' billy bob called himself. right after bin laden made a promise to put "the hurts to us". and then posted a worthless price on his head that wasn't even worth his own.. no, i had no intrest in killing him(billy), but i knew a few fellow Marines with 16+ years that were forced to be H/Dischargered when he closed almost all of the USMC and USN base's in california... at least a good chunk of californians realized how much they fubar'ed when they ellect gray davis, and recalled him..
I like the label "middle of the road or moderate". That is someone who doesn't know what he believes in. Think I will just straddle the fence. "You have to be a moderate to get the votes here".
I am unemployed. Therefore, today, I am a Socialist Liberal; but only because of the check the State sends every Wednesday. Given my druthers, I am actually a moderate conservative.
Give me the Second Amendment, the right to choose, price controls, and less government for starters. I'll get back to you with the rest of my demands...
Type in political tests on your search engine.their are several test that come up that you can take. One test i took it showed me more towards the left.Ive always thought that most people believe basically the same.Out of over 2 million people that took the test only 7% were were right wing Republicans about 64%were to the middle or towards the left and the rest was all the way left.Give it a try

I scored a 21 and am right in the middle. I still don't understand the difference.
well a conservative will always support small goverment, the less someone tells you what to do the happier they are. a liberal really likes large goverment. socialized medicine is great, we need more people in washington to fix the problems the politicians make. they want goverment groups to monitor and reform campaign spending, welfare, the enviroment, etc.. the conservatives feel this is a waste(me, my wife scored a 33). tired of paying taxs for hookey laws that only are there to prove that someone is actually doing there job. since californis has introduced the CARB( one of the most expensive costs to californians BTW) the smog index in the silicon valley has gone up by four folds, and in the la basin it has tripled.. the growth, and vehicle population doesn't support the amount of smog being made. so they want to increase taxs so they can install roadside "gross polluter machines", basically get you off the road if you fart, while you drive by. more smog laws to make the air cleaner, so we need more tax's to support the costs. a liberal will also curse big business for paying way to little in taxs, but the more money the company has the more employees it has, which means less welfare, and more money being spent. which means more jobs, and more jobs mean more money, etc.. the circle just goes. with more taxs, less money that can be spent and the less money in circulation which means recession, or worse, depresion. tired of social security, i am paying some 8-10 times more than they ever put in. it costs me money in taxs. a smart person will invest what little you have to support them when they retire. my father draws no income from social security( he is 73) he only draws on the retirement the DOD gives him, as well as the intrest on the 401k's and PRF he made over the years. smart huh.. i am doing the same, as well as building a strong business for my wife and i to live off of, and at no other tax payers costs. hope that helps a little..
basically
liberal- big goverment-more taxs from business, large and small
conservative-investor-small taxs-small goverment
