Hello all! I’ve been a very long time lurker of the FTE forum. I’ve finally came across a problem I haven’t fixed or heard of on the forum.
earlier this week I was towing my 4500 pound camper through the Shenandoah mountains, truck ran perfect and trans never went over 180 degrees. About 30 minutes from home at a stoplight my transmission would hardly move. 1st gear at 2-3k rpm’s barely moved the truck. Temps were all still normal, I shut the truck down, no leaks, bright pink fluid still. I turn It back on and get the rest of the way home.
After getting home and pulling a code po720 and po733 I replaced and inspected both the OSS and the VSS. After a few test drives, the truck will shift all gears smoothly minus 4th/ overdrive. It will attempt to shift into 4th and the truck will immediately lurch forward as if it was forced back into 3rd. And of course the random “neutral/hi revving” situation will happen like at the stoplight, it seems more common at higher speeds instead of dead stops. Also, After i cleared the codes, they didn’t return even after replicating the problem.
I plan on dropping the pan tomorrow, wanting to know if this sounds like a mechanical failure and not something electrical before I start looking for a transmission. Truck is a 2002 7.3 with 196k on it. It had a reman trans put in at 140k. Thanks in advance!
Does it want to drive in neutral? Does reverse work normally?
yes, reverse works normal. And no it does not want to drive in neutral. Kinda worded that weird. For example it will be in gear, (1st 2nd or 3rd) but barely move or not move at all when I apply throttle.
It could be loose feedbolts. These bolts are located in the case, under the main valve body. You need to remove the pan and main valve body to access them. If they are loose and you haven't damaged the clutches with all of the slipping, tightening the bolts will fix this.
If the feedbolts are tight, there are internal problems and the trans needs to come out and get replaced or rebuilt.
Thanks so much for the help mark! I was gonna check them next but My suspicion was confirmed. looks like it’s time for a rebuild! Fluid is only 10k miles old and full of metallic shavings.
