radio upgrade question
I am looking to upgrade it, i am seeing mixed messages on it i will loose the compass and temp reading out of the display in the dash. if so is there a way to retain them. and also can the factory mic and camera be hooked to the aftermarket unit.
Sorry this is not in the radio forum, but is it specific to a 2011,
thanks
My (new) radio / head unit included input for a backup camera I added, (the reason I bought it). As for the factory microphone, my XL doesn't have one, but several after market head units have an input for this, you'll likely have to figure out which wire(s) to use.
My '09 wiring diagram manual, (I believe) calls this display FDIM, front Display interface module. electrically connected via C2123, the display seems to be driven by the FCIM, front controls interface module via the CAN BUS. I believe the FCIM is basically the buttons and electronics that are also removed when you remove the OEM radio (ACM, Audio Control Module)
"Basically" (I believe) the CAN BUS is a computer driven network, wires are shared among multiple components but some how each device knows which signal is the one for it. I'm not sure but it appears to me the FDIM looks like it is controlled by the FCIM and ACM (aka your OEM radio).
Summary, I believe your '11 is similar to my '09
Based on my review it appears you will lose the compass, clock and temperature currently displayed..
Am I sure ... NO.
The stuff going through the BUS goes bye-bye.
I did something similar with my Ram tossing the junk OEM radio out. Lost compass, but maps takes care of that, so I’ll cope.
Backup cam should be no problem to swap over, but the mic may be paired to the factory radio. I lost both overhead mics on my Ram because (the nitty gritty reason slips my mind, but aftermarket radios don’t pick them up at all) they’re just made for UConnect. You may or may not have the same fate.
The replacement I bought even gives me onscreen climate controls, navigation, as well as individual tire pressures, didn't have any of that from the factory but I do now. The Maestro module is the canbus link but only works with certain stereos.
That is why I mentioned Crutchfields, they have a what fits and what to get system that supplies all the 411 they need to make an informed decision. I did and couldn't be happier.
Thanks for your patience and help.
I went to crutchfields and got a

The Alpine system I installed was a bitter pill to swallow @ $2,300 and only fits trucks that had this type system from the factory...

...so it was very exclusive and they knew it thus the cost. The nice part of it is it was completely plug-n-play, took me about 15-20 mins including programming the Maestro module for steering wheel controls and sync.
I've seen a used one or 2 pop up on ebay over the years, got mine new in 2018.
How did you mount it in the same location?
I can not find much in the way of keeping it all clean looking.
Thanks
