radio upgrade question

i have a 2011 Lariat with the normal radio.
I am looking to upgrade it, i am seeing mixed messages on it i will loose the compass and temp reading out of the display in the dash. if so is there a way to retain them. and also can the factory mic and camera be hooked to the aftermarket unit.
Sorry this is not in the radio forum, but is it specific to a 2011,
thanks

Best bet is to use the fitment guide over on www.crutchfield.com

I replaced my factory radio on my '09 XL.. The dash display NO LONGER shows the time or any radio information. It only displays the "F150 FORD BUILT TOUGH" commercial I normally only saw @ S/U. I assume all the "non-commercial" stuff was controlled by the radio unit.

My (new) radio / head unit included input for a backup camera I added, (the reason I bought it). As for the factory microphone, my XL doesn't have one, but several after market head units have an input for this, you'll likely have to figure out which wire(s) to use.

My '09 wiring diagram manual, (I believe) calls this display FDIM, front Display interface module. electrically connected via C2123, the display seems to be driven by the FCIM, front controls interface module via the CAN BUS. I believe the FCIM is basically the buttons and electronics that are also removed when you remove the OEM radio (ACM, Audio Control Module)
"Basically" (I believe) the CAN BUS is a computer driven network, wires are shared among multiple components but some how each device knows which signal is the one for it. I'm not sure but it appears to me the FDIM looks like it is controlled by the FCIM and ACM (aka your OEM radio).

Summary, I believe your '11 is similar to my '09
Based on my review it appears you will lose the compass, clock and temperature currently displayed..
Am I sure ... NO.

What he said👆🏼

The stuff going through the BUS goes bye-bye.

I did something similar with my Ram tossing the junk OEM radio out. Lost compass, but maps takes care of that, so I’ll cope.

Backup cam should be no problem to swap over, but the mic may be paired to the factory radio. I lost both overhead mics on my Ram because (the nitty gritty reason slips my mind, but aftermarket radios don’t pick them up at all) they’re just made for UConnect. You may or may not have the same fate.

Just noticed they said it was a Lariat, in 2011 a Lariat had the 8" MFT screen IIRC, There is currently no known replacement other than gutting the dash for an entirely different unit but they may be able to get one like I did for my truck that uses a module called Maestro that retains steering wheel controls, all canbus as well.

The replacement I bought even gives me onscreen climate controls, navigation, as well as individual tire pressures, didn't have any of that from the factory but I do now. The Maestro module is the canbus link but only works with certain stereos.

That is why I mentioned Crutchfields, they have a what fits and what to get system that supplies all the 411 they need to make an informed decision. I did and couldn't be happier.

anyone know if i can hijack the factory camera and pit it into this radio?
Move it from the mirror would be nice to have a bigger screen i think.

they said with the data linj i can have my steering wheel controls etc. so that will be good as well.

Yes you can. You would need to find the 2 wires for video + and - in the harness behind the driver side kick panel and tap into them.

It's an Alpine made exclusively for 2013-2014 trucks that have the little 4" screen from the factory.

yours looks like $1,000,000...but sadly I checked it @ the Crutch: says: Discontinued
this is my 'el cheapo" implementation in my XL:
(note the display above ALWAYS shows the F150 commercial)

Discontinued

Nice looking stereo.

The Alpine system I installed was a bitter pill to swallow @ $2,300 and only fits trucks that had this type system from the factory...

...so it was very exclusive and they knew it thus the cost. The nice part of it is it was completely plug-n-play, took me about 15-20 mins including programming the Maestro module for steering wheel controls and sync.

I've seen a used one or 2 pop up on ebay over the years, got mine new in 2018.

so i have this installed, not hooked up o the camera yet. But another question. Crutchfield made it so i could keep my factory AUX port. nut not the USB. It is built into the radio with a cord coming out. that will reach the original place.
How did you mount it in the same location?
I can not find much in the way of keeping it all clean looking.
Thanks

My system came with a new panel that popped into the dash where the aux and usb are and it added an HDMI port as well. Just snaped it into place. They make all types of aftermarket usb panels for vehicles where you could cut a hole and pop it in place.
