I'm curious if anyone has ever set up dual sidepipes on an excursion, I want to use electric cutouts if possible so I can have the original quiet exhaust, then a set of pipes running down the running boards, but I'm curious to see if anyone has done this before
In my opinion it seems like it would be basically a requirement to have the sdp y pipe or whoever makes it to have the extra room for exhaust pieces, but other than that it seems like it would be fairly straightforward
I had a 1969 For Econoline Van in High School that had chrome drag pipes on it. It also had larger rear tires than on the front, only the front two seats, and **** carpet throughout the rest with spray painted black windows in the rear. I thought it was cool, but it was crazy to drive as the steering was worn to the point of having to constantly move it back and forth just to keep it between the lines. Driving on backroads was an art form.
I think if you were to put drag pipes on an X, you'r want to do away with the running boards so you can move them up to the door bottoms. Otherwise, probably look weird.

Personally, I think sidepipes would look very strange on an EX, either below or in place of the running boards. But it’s your buggy and your cash, so have at it!
If your goal is to just make more noise your plan sounds solid, but if the goal is to allow it to breath better for certain situations then forget about the goofy sidepipes and get a high quality set of long tube headers. Stock manifolds with exhaust cutouts still leave the very restrictive manifolds as the choke point in the system.
I would definitely remove the running boards, the sidepipes would run in place of them
I kinda fell in love with sidepipes since i had a 68 galaxie with a set, and just a little 302 with a set of 3 inch sidepipes made a LOT of noise (the guys at autozone could hear it from several miles away)
My idea is to put the cutouts coming down from the manifolds if possible to make it easier, but i will figure something else out if i need to for the project, first i need to figure out the logistics behind actually putting sidepipes on
They should look just fine if done alright, if you look at pictures of standard superduties with sidepipes, there is one or two photos that dont look bad at all
That was actually something i had thought about, but instead of just using those in conjunction, i kinda want to figure out a way to have mounts like that, and have the exhaust in place of that bar.
The issue with that would be that it would look kinda goofy, and it would be hard to insulate it where you would want to step
In reality the idea i like the most is to tuck the pipes as close as i can to the rockers, while still being out a bit to keep something in that area
Not on an ex, but I did it with a stack kit on a buddy's crew cab as a goof. I went over to help with the installation, and as we laid the parts out on the ground, one of us said "hey you could do side pipes with that".
I liked the way it turned out, kinda classic retro-rod look, I think the crossover was at the trans cross member, with the turnouts just ahead of the rear tires. You are going to need some extra ground clearance, and the outflow was never quite symmetrical, favoring the passenger side. That was a 7.3 though.
So far the only work i have gotten done is removing the running boards to mock things up when i want, and welding up one of the 90's i need to turn
My plan is to just hook into the downpipe from the exhaust manifolds on each side with 2.5 inch, then merge it into the 3.5 inch pipe i have (3.5 inch electrical conduit from the jobsite im on)
For now since i drive to work at 5 i plan on being able to cap off the ends of the pipes with a mashed together coupling thing
I wanted to avoid hooking into the exhaust after the merge due to the fact that it would favor one side really badly, which would defeat the purpose
Chrome would be nice, but unfortunately since the pipe was free i just used black paint
On a side note, the pipes actually stay cool enough that regular spray paint doesnt burn off
