I have an 84 BII with the 2.8L. When the engine is cold, it starts fine. Once the engine has warmed up, the starter will not engage. I have checked the trouble codes, but there is only 11 (all OK). I have replaced the starter solenoid and ignition switch. I had the starter checked, and it was fine. When the starter will not turn, I can jump across the starter solenoid and the starter will spin just fine, with the key on it will start and run fine. I have cleaned the ground connections behind the starter solenoid, battery connections, ground wire to the block and to the frameA voltage check at the solenoid cold shows fine. The same check at the soleniod (key side) shows 8.4 volts hot. To me this shows that there is a connection somewhere that prevents sufficient voltage from getting to the solenoid when the key is turned to start and the engine is warm. Any ideas?
I would agree except for the fact that when I place a jumper from the hot side of the battery to the I connection on the solenoid the starter turns just fine every time. I did make sure the positive cable was clean on both ends. If it is the cable, why would jumping the solenoid this way turn the starter?
Because you are bypassing that cable. Or am I missing something? Is your solenoid grounded? Put an ohm meter on the metal portion of the solenoid and the sheet medal that the solenoid bolts to. You should get an infinate reading. If not scrap all the crap off the areas weher the bolts go and try again.
Here is my biggest problem. I don't have a manual that tells me anything other than to change the solenoid or the ignition switch. Both have been changed. What ever the problem is prevents a sufficient voltage from getting to the "I" terminal on the solenoid, but only when the engine is warm. When the engine is cold everything works fine. What else can I check? The Haynes manual is not real clear on chasing wires for this part. All help is appreciated.
