My 81 Z28 has functional vents in the fenders. Never noticed smells, smoke, heat coming from them and I rode with the T-tops out whenever I could.

My 15 435iX has functional vents in the fenders. Same story (except for the T-tops).

While the Z28 had a lower temp. thermostat in it and was a manual transmission that my have generated less heat to start with.

The 435iX has a twin turbo set up crammed between the engine and the right fender well, an 8 spd. automatic and a full time transfer case all crammed up close to the engine/transmission under the car. I'm sure it's much hotter than the old Z28.

Neither one will work as hard as a big truck pulling a heavy trailer though.

That big chin spoiler under the front bumper helps create a lower pressure area under the truck to allow more air through the radiator/engine compartment and exit from the bottom. Didn't believe it made that much of a difference till I took one off the 83 Z28 and had cooling issues with it before putting one back on it and seeing the temps drop back down again.

I wonder if the Ford engineers considered installing a fan or two to help blow air out of the vents, or out the bottom of the engine compartment?

The new 2023 ones are. They specifically said they vent to the engine bay.

It seems Ford went to a lot of trouble here to make a recessed fender badge. Makes you wonder what, if any, purpose they do serve, such as reinforcing an attachment point or making the fender more structurally robust, having nothing to do with cooling. Or like the fins on an old Cadillac maybe they do nothing, and the money was spent purely because it looks cool. I don't care for the newer look of the vents.

Yeah… I just realized that. I never actually pulled my fender badges off or even looked real close I guess. Plus, the AMB color of my truck probably helped the illusion… I’m still really wanting the Billet Badges fender badge though and I guess now I don’t have to worry at all about “vents”… ah well.
