My 97 f150 with a 4.6 has developed a bad oil leak, but i can't tell where its coming from. There is small tube that comes down on passenger side of the engine near where the tranny and engine split that looks like it could be one of the possiblites for the loss of oil. what is this tube for. the other possiblity looks like a blown head gasket. Has the 4.6 been known to have head gasket problems or this just an isolated case. The truck only has 40,000 miles on it. Any info would be appreciated.
I know this sounds kind of stupid, but check the bolts on your oilpan. I had an '81 Chebby that leaked oil for at least a year before I figured out that most of the bolts holding both pieces of my opil pan needed at least 4 complete turns to be tight.
I know that there was some oil leaks on 4.6 and 5.4s where the corner of the head met the block and timing chain cover on the top inner side.If you still have warranty Ford usually will honor the fix for the oil leak.I had it done on my used to be 01" supercrew w/4.6L. Ford changed the heads not just the gaskets, incase there was somthing wrong w/ the heads. Only had 26000 miles on it. Don't know if this helps.

Leaking head gaskets are quite common but usually on 1999 and up trucks. It can still happen though.
The best way to find the leak is probably to steam clean the whole underside of the engine and then keep an eye on it for a few days and see if you can tell where it's coming from.
Most dealers and some smaller shops have dye kits too. They add a package of dye to the oil and then after running it a while they inspect it with a black light. The dye shows up brightly so the leak can be found.
