I have been keeping up with this forum for about a month now. I have noticed many people talking about the 7.3 not being able to handle much boost or aftermarket power addons. They say the 7.3 IDI is not a strong enough motor. I have also read that the factory turbo engines have stronger bottum ends. So my question is can my engine being a factory engine handle more power then a NA 7.3 with turbo addon?
I have heard on another post about the factory turbo'd engines having bigger wrist pins or something. Whatever the case, they can handle a turbo just fine. Anything that will take the motor out will most likely happen with or without the turbo.
The real question is why Ford would bother beefing up anything in the factory engines, because they only added like 5 hp from the non-turbo'd engine. They reverse engineered what was a good design from ATS and made it a piece of crap with a 10 year old exhaust system. Just venting...
Let's see, you were asking about boost right? On non-wastegated models like Hypermax and the early ATS we always saw 10 or 11 pounds but the factory engines and the newer ATS kits were anywhere from 6-8 psi. I used to read in the Hypermax paperwork not to go past 12, but mine see's 15-17 pounds on a pull. I do try and keep it around 12 though (it's hard when there's a Dodge along side).

I run about the same as spectramac, about 12lbs and a little more when I am pulling, but I try and keep it low in hopes of not sending a head through the hood.. Scotty
I have an '85 6.9 with an ATS system on it and I keep it around 12-14 PSI. I have to say that the turbo addition made a huge difference (more than +5hp). I have put on 200,000miles with this system on and have not had to replace any engine parts because of it. But I did learn that it is important to watch the exhaust temp. :S
Actually, Ford did do a few things to the 93.5-94.5 Factory turbo. Heavier wrist pins, plasma coated piston crowns, and inconel exhaust valves.
The 190 horse rating is all marketing. Who the hell would have bought the newly introduced PSD rated at 215hp if the previous engine was putting out more.
They restricted the exhaust and turbo for a reason,$$$...
Change the turbine housing, outlet elbow, put on a 3" downpipe, along with decent exhaust and she'll wake right up and put an early PSD right in it's place.
