2 weeks ago, lightning struck a tree in close proximity to my 03 7.3. After the strike, the engine would turn over, but would not fire (all accessories still work, radio, PW, interior lights…..). I replaced the CPS with my good spare, still no fire. My buddy has a 2001 7.3 that is driven daily, so we pulled the IDM from his truck and installed it in my truck, and it started right up and idled fine (I did not drive it). I ordered a “rebuilt” IDM, and when I installed the new one, it started right up and idled fine. I then took it for a drive, and it started running very rough, dropping rpm’s and then building rpm’s up, only to drop again, and basically just ran like crap. I pulled the new IDM, and reinstalled my buddy’s known good one, same results, starts and idles fine, runs like crap when you accelerate. I don’t have a scan tool (though I’m ordering one today), and I can’t drive it anywhere to have it scanned. Any ideas as to what the issue may be? Like I said earlier, it starts fine now with both my rebuilt IDM and my buddy’s IDM, and idles great, but as soon as you try and accelerate, it sounds to me like it’s dropping injectors. I don’t believe it’s the new IDM, as it runs the same with my buddy’s IDM installed in mine.
Thanks.
I don't know much about diesel, but if it starts and runs fine at idle, I think I'd be checking the fuel pressure when in gear and driving see if it's dropping below the normal operating pressure. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will answer soon.
