i have a 1972 351c sbbl and i notice that when i turn on my car in the morning the oil pressure is at about 70 but when it is hot and i am driving it it has about 24psi in drive and about 35psi in park . ive had this engine for about 5 years now and there is no knock coming from the engine or does not burn any oil . could this oil pressure be right?or is there something wrong with my engine.
How many miles are on the motor? I'd suspect worn bearings, in this order: rod bearings, main bearings, cam bearings. As long as you've got at least 10psi for every 1000 engine RPM's it should be fine for now. But it should be up around 30-40psi going down the highway at about 55mph, so I do think you have some wear. However, 35psi in park is not bad at all, I wish mine were that high. My 360 only gets about 8psi in park hot idle. I'd say you'll be fine, dont worry about it.
Originally posted by hotbbb i meant to sya that when i have the brake on the car and the car is not mkving but it is in drive the pressure is at 24psi is this correct.
24 psi at idle speed is fine. More important, what is the psi at 2000 rpm?
I would suggest you should be seeing about 50 or so at 2000 rpm, but the spec may allow less (probably 40 to 60 at 2000--look it up in the Chiltons manual).
