Surging

Alright, so last Sunday I decided to fix the oil leak coming from the oil cooler housing. I tore it all down Sunday, and replaced the gasket and put it all back together Monday morning.

When I went to fire it up, the engine was running very rough, which in my experience is normal until the air gets out of the fuel system. However, it continues to run rough even after 3 days of letting it run and sit. It's like there is still air in the system.

When I put it gear and give it throttle, the rpms don't increase nor will the truck move under it's own power. I can put the peddle to the floor and no change in the rpms but I do see black smoke come from the exhaust when I do this.

I thought maybe something was left unplugged, yet I have rechecked all connections four times now. Then I thought maybe it has something to do with disconnecting the batteries while I was working on it.

Below is a video of it surging at idle. She ran perfect before I changed the gasket.

Have you gone back and checked all of the electrical connections you removed while getting down to the oil cooler? I'm guessing you've got something not fully plugged in. My money would be on the IPR valve or a FICM connector.

Otherwise you'll need to get some way of reading live data to properly diagnose.

Thanks for the reply. This morning I went through all the wiring one more time to make sure all the connections were fully seated. I also pealed back the wire looms to make sure no wires were pierced or crushed. Everything looks fine and is assembled correctly.

This has me stumped as it ran perfectly fine before changing the gasket.

As recommended on the other forum - you need a good scan tool ....... or you could guess and MAYBE get it right.

I followed the fuel line running down to the left bank (facing the truck) and broke it loose to see if it was air locked. Sure enough I heard air come out. A lot of air! Tighten it back up, cranked her over, and she fired right up with a little hesitation but smoothed out within seconds. She is back to running good again 🍻

After 3 days of problems and still "a lot of air" - that probably isn't just your average "air in the line". And with that much air, it sure isn't good for injector longevity.

Thought the same. Took it out for a 10 mile drive and all seems good. Probably gonna trade it in, in a month or so. Owned this for 10 years and have spent more money in repairs than I paid for it.
