Dash wire diagram help

Hi everyone, getting close to finishing my American Autowire classic update kit. I need a little info to finish up the instrument cluster. My truck is a ‘62 Uni, but I exchanged the original gauge cluster with one from a ‘65. The difference is, it has an oil pressure gauge and also an Alt gauge. I used to have a ‘65 manual, but I can’t find it, so I must have sold it off after getting my first Uni (30 years ago). My question is, for the oil press and alt gauge, what is the other terminal for? Is it straight 12v or does it also feed off of the CV regulator (5v). If anyone has a link to the wire diagram, that probably would answer my question.

Your oil pressure gauge uses the same 5V feed as the fuel and temp gauges. I don't know if you can use the ALT. gauge with the harness you have since those gauges were optional and used a separate harness where all the power to the truck passed thru the ALT gauge.
The current went from the + on the start relay to the gauge then from the gauge back to the junction block. #6 wire, I think. There was no breaker except on big trucks I added that.

Thank you for the reply, that will help some. You must have a custom cab instrument cluster, but it probably has the same wiring that my old ‘65 had. I’ll upload a picture of the set up I’m using. It was taken from a ‘65 truck that I parted out 30 years ago. I can make another call to AAW tech support, now that I know a little more.

I talked to AAW tech support today. You are correct that the stock ammeter can’t be used with this kit. I understand it is because the one wire alternator setup will put out more amps than the old ammeters could handle. I’ll have to have it converted to a volt meter in order to use it. I have a friend that might be able to do it, or I can send it away.

Are you using a 10si alternator?

I’m using a Powermaster setup, it looks like the original generator. I picked it because I like the original look and I thought I could use the original mounting brackets. The mounting brackets worked good, but the tensioner arm was too short, so I had to fab one.

I used the same wiring kit but also used a single wire alternator and after market volt meter. I connected it as indicated in the wiring kit and it works fine

After market Alternator guage. Using a single wire alternator

American Auto wiring harnes and 63 Mercury dash with after market oil pressure and volt guage.

Thanks for posting this, it helps to see how others did theirs.

BTW, did you change over to LED bulbs? I think I’m going to, but trying to pick a proper bulb that will fit and last.

You can get a PDF download online of the entire factory manual, for cheap.

Good to know, but I won’t need an entire ‘65 manual, just the instrument wiring since I’m upgrading my panel. I already have a ‘62 factory manual.

Final product

I finished up all the wiring, including a conversion from ammeter to voltage meter. Powered up the lights to make sure at least those work okay. I think I’m missing something on the buckets for the oil and Alt gauge that provides a better ground to the panel. But I got it to work. Have to wait until the truck is ready to start before I can check the rest of the wiring. Thanks for everyone’s input!
