I've got one zf5-42 with an counter shaft bearing out, and another zf5-42 with case cracks so bad it won't hold fluid. Just looking to put one usable zf5 together.
My 88 cracked the bellhousing part of the ZF case, so I had to swap it. The front half of the case isn't too bad to swap, most of the parts are held into the rear part of the case. I don't remember all the specifics off the top of my head, but there are a few things to do to release the detents on the shift rails. Loosen the bolts, I think you need to drive out the two guide pins, and the case will be loose. If you stand it up on the output end (input shaft straight up in the air), you can pull the front part of the case off, then drop the replacement case on and put it back together.
Seeing as you're dealing with a bearing issue, that may take some work, and hope the race hasn't spun which may ruin the case? There is a procedure to set the preload on the bearing you'll need to follow. There was a good thread with tons of pictures of a complete breakdown someplace. Was very useful when I tore mine apart. I think I tore mine all the way down to replace the bearings while I was at it, even though I don't remember a problem with it. The Ford factory manual has a good write up with the procedure as well. Someone may have posted a bunch of scans from it online as well.
Will need to check bearings preload before calling it good and throwing it in the truck. Tapered bearings on those shafts, proper preload is very important.
If you don't have the correct bearing pullers, you can "slam" the gear sets apart. I guess the guy in the video did it too, but doesn't really show it. Sure would have been handy having an extra set of hands... I did mine all by myself. Took a little bit to get everything back together that way, but it is doable.
Just passing on what I stumble on and save. Glad to help.

Good thread. I have an S42 sitting on the floor in my garage with a busted tail housing. If anyone has a tail housing they can sell, please message me.
