YOM Plates

I was at the Redneck Rumble yesterday and bought this 56 Tennessee license plate for my 56 F100. The truck is registered in CA with 56 CA YOM plates and since I am registering it in my new home it's time for new YOM plates. I spoke with the vendor at length about how much info can be gleaned from these old plates...I just like them because they are in the shape of Tennessee. I found out that the "F/1" on the plate means that it was a farm truck, not an F-1 Ford. BTW, anyone looking for some 56 CA plates?

Nice plate, Charlie! Being an old license plate geek, I've always liked the state shaped Tennessee plates. Post a pic with it on your truck when you get it mounted.

Charlie, I always like the state shaped Tennessee plates. Not every state can do that. PA plates used to have the shape of the state embossed on the rectangular plate.

Here are my YOM plate on my 54, a 55 plate on the front of my 55 F350. See how PA changed the color pattern every year.

Here are YOM plates from PA Truckstock 2020.

And here is what our boring PA plates look like today , picture courtesy, of Dennis's lite blue 54.

Here is my Indiana AMY (Authentic Manufacture Year) plate.

I picked up a 54 PA YOM truck plate off ebay for when I move back home in a couple years.

Here is mine
The F is for farm truck. The W is for Washington County Idaho. I didn’t want to put the sticker on the license plate so made this little extension that I fold back down out of the way most of the time.

PA doesn't issue registration stickers anymore in an effort to save money. See Dennis' '17' sticker above? That was the last year we used them. Now the police run your plate to see if your vehicle is currently registered.

It's interesting that a YOM plate needs a registration sticker. That's an ingenious way to hide it.

Abe,
Yeah I actually got that idea from another F1 guy who I saw at our car show in May.
I agree that the sticker is kinda unnecessary. I really never have it showing just figured I could show it if I ever got stopped.

Ive always loved those Tenn. plates myself!

Here's an interesting site https://njplates.moini.net/news.html for any New Jersey residents. YOM are only allowed on the Front of the vehicle and you must have your original plates on hand inside the car.

I have a Farmer plate and also a Comm plate I bought a pair of each in case they change the law one day and allow you to register with them.

Here are the plates that are currently registered to my 56. When I bought them, the CA DMV sent me a pair of tags to stick the month/year stickers on that will bolt on to the plate rather than have to stick them on the plate itself. Not sure how Tennessee handles the stickers, but I'll find out this week when I register the truck.

I got a set of farm plates for my F-1 but CT DMV won't allow me to use them. The YOM law says you have to register as a classic and then you can apply to display YOM plates. When I tried to do that they insisted that the YOM plates have to be passenger plates and that I couldn't register as a farm vehicle. I pointed out that I was registered as a classic and just wanted to "display" the YOM farm plate. They wouldn't budge.

Dan, I could see them saying that. The Farm plates are too specific to actual use. Why don't you try getting some old Commercial plates instead? Most times trucks were registered with commercial plates anyway. And I don't think there would be any objection to that since it doesn't have a back seat.

I have both sets of commercial and farm plates in case New Jersey ever decides to allow YOM to be registered. But then I heard in New York for example, you have to bring the old plates in for registration in a a pre-restored condition. In other words if they're shiny and nice looking they wont allow you to use them. Just what I heard not sure thats true?

That's a nice one, JP. Have you thought of using it for your YOM plate?

I may do that next time it comes up for renewal. I had a YOM plate on the 61 Tbird I had. If I recall correctly, I had to register it as an antique, and because of that, I had to take it over to be inspected. When I got the truck, I decided I didn't want to go through the hassle, so I just got truck plates for it.
