98 explorer xlt wont start!

98 explorer wont start - was running fine then this morning it cranks but does not start - sound like the fuel pump is operating when i listen to it thru the fuel filler - any help would be greatly appriciated!

Same probelm on my buddy's 98 explorer, the truck runs fine, but sometimes it will crank and crank but wont start, ussually when he shuts it off then tries to start in like 5 min, he took it to ford they said the computer was not sending the signal to the fuel pump to pump fuel sometimes and it needed to be replaced, he did not want to do it so he just waiting for it to go completly if it does, but it could just be a rely seems to be common on these model years i've seen a lot of the same posts on this, but try to let it sit for a while or turn the key to off and then back to on wait till you hear the pump shut off then try to start it
