I have a 2001 F250 4x4 gasser. I put a decked tool box in the back and my tools are weighing it down a bit. I was wondering if anyone has switched out a F250 leaf springs for F350 ones and adding the F350 leaf helpers. Let me know what you guys think. Before I go and buy add a leaf and raise it 2inches too.
OK, there aren't any F-250 and F-350 springs. The only difference in the F-250 and F-350 rear suspension was the lift blocks. The F-350 lift blocks were nominally 2 inches taller. The GVWR and options determined the rating of the springs.
Installing the 4 inch lift blocks is a popular rear suspension modification for 1st and 2nd generation F-250 owners.
So, a heavier leaf spring package would work, or a taller lift block would work, or even both. But, I would start with just loading the truck up and seeing how it reacts. I think you might be surprised.
Thanks for the info. It’s already loaded with the box and tools. Not a lot of sag but the rear is lower than the front so I want to toughen it up. I’ll just get the add a leaf package for the rear and the additional leaf helper mount. I’ll probably do 2.5 inches in the rear and 2 inch in the front. After that it’s time for wheels and tires. Nothing crazy just want a more aggressive stance to compete with the newer bodies.
You may want to consider calling up a local spring shop (ask your county road commission who services the springs on their trucks). They can likely build you complete new spring packs that look factory for a really good price...installed. They'll be able to taylor the springs to what you're looking to do as well. I don't think they can legally change your rated GVW, though, even if your new springs would warrant it.
Why not go for a set of rear supplemental air bags? You could then dial in whatever additional spring rate you want ( by adding or removing air) so if you add more load (like towing a heavy tongue weight trailer), you can put some more spring rate in, or if you lighten the load (take some of the tools out of the toolbox) you can take some spring rate out.
And they'd be a lot easier to install than swapping out leaf spring packs.
