I've seen some discussion on this but not really an answer. Recently the compass on my 2018 with Sync 3 always reads N, on the dash and on the compass on the screen. I disconnected the batteries for a few minutes and no change. No I did not change the setting to true north, and not it has not been sitting in the same position for a long period.
Another weird thing is I have my display on the night setting so it's not so bright. I like the black background. Been like this for 3 years and all of a sudden it goes to a daytime setting every time I start it. Change it back and it does the same thing.
Have you tried doing a full reset on the radio itself? Not by disconnecting the batteries, the radio unit has an internal memory. Go to the settings menu and scroll through until you find the reset section and follow the prompts. You will have to re-enter your radio presets and pair your phone if you use one through Bluetooth. I had to do this on my wife's Explorer for similar conditions. Also, have you checked your battery(s) lately? The radio messing up is usually one of the first symptoms of a weak or failing battery cell in my experience with previous the Fords I have owned.
Reverend Jim, yes I did a system reset on the Sync 3. My batteries are still spinning the starter over like the day I got it, but I guess I check into them.
