Hi all I'm in the planning and saving stages of buying an F350 SRW. We currently have a F250 with the 6.2 and a truck camper. We're going to be going to Alaska next year our biggest expense on that trip is Gas. We rode to the Grand Canyon with our camper and we got 10 MPG averaged over 2000 miles and 200 gallons of gas. This trip will be considerably longer.
Since we'll need max payload is it worth the extra $$ on the diesel? Gas motors have a lot of power and weigh less.
Diesel has more power but weighs more.
What do you all think? I know everyone has different opinions. What do folks get with a Large load with the diesel and the Gassers? Towing doesn't matter to us since the camper wll be the load. See the picture of our camper. Its a "FORD" 8.4S
With that dimensional load you are going to be getting poor mileage with either gas or diesel fighting through the wind. Go with the overall cheaper truck in my opinion.
Thanks everyone. I'm thinking 7.3 Gas possibly a Dually. XLT with the offroad package. I'll be taking out the rear seats for storage. and as OBS460 noted Boondocking for sure. We're stilll planning.
Go gas, you aren't hauling anything that requires the added torque the diesel provides. Now if you were pulling an 18K pound 5th wheel, different story.
MPG either way is going to cost, no savings advantage.
If you’re 100% sure you’ll never tow a 5th wheel, I personally would get a gasser. Available power will surpass your needs with the camper, mileage with either will be comparable but as you stated fuel will be your largest expense. Unleaded vs diesel, save the $2.00 per gallon price difference. Have fun. I drove the Alcan highway i the spring of 85’ and the winter of 89’.
Made some of that trip this summer. 11,682 miles and 1058 gallons of diesel. 2021 F450 with a Lance 992 pulling a Jeep Wrangler. Average cost of diesel was $6.22 USD per gallon. Gas would have been much less expensive.
Texas track was from a different trip Truck with camper was probably close to 15k lbs fully loaded. We hold 51 gallons of fresh water.
wow that quite the rig! We're pretty happy with the 250. We do a lot of camping in California, Lots of short trips. Tahoe etc.
We had towed a 26 ft TT in the past but the Truck camper is great.
Thank you for the advise and that's a hell of a trip!!!

What's wrong with your current truck that makes you want to buy a new one???
You will never make up the difference in fuel costs compared to the cost of a new truck.
And, are we actually talking about a new truck you want, or a used one?
New trucks are 11 grand more for a diesel, again, you'll never recoup the price difference in the lower amount of fuel used.
The most money saving thing to do is keep the current truck.

sometimes you just want something else. Not everyone thinks,or has to, in terms of budget.
OP, do you want a diesel? Get it. A 6.2 will definitely move you to where you need. A 7.3 will be better. A 6.7 will be a blast.

But, the OP is talking about fuel cost and mileage, sounds like he is trying to consider budget and practicality.
Yup, if you just want one, and money is not a factor in purchase price, buy the diesel for the power and fuel economy, buy the gas for ease of use, don't worry about the fuel economy.
As to driving to Alaska and back, buy whichever truck makes your butt feel best, it'll be sitting in the seat for a very long time.
It cost me $4k in gas to tow my 17k lb 5th wheel from Tennessee to Alaska in June. That was when gas was in the high $4 range in most of the country. Gas prices in Canada were cringeworthy in some places. $2.55/L × 40 gallons = $385 fill-up.
DO NOT full-up in Destruction Bay drive the little ways to Burwash. It cost me $400+ to fill-up my diesel last year and then I found out Burwash has a card lock and was $.30 cheaper per liter.
