Sticky question.

In its distant past, my truck 51F1 has been hit pretty hard. The front cab mounts (firewall to frame) have been either bent or broken and the firewall bent.
I've managed to remove both brackets, and straightened out the firewall. I have purchased new brackets. I'm not too sure of my welding ability,,,,,,,
Questions for those who know.....would Panel Bond Adhesive be suitable/strong enough to attach them with? If so, which Adhesive (brand and number) do I need to look for?
if adhesive can be used, I'd have to clean all old paint/rust etc off the firewall, but would I also have to clean Weld Through Primer off the brackets, to make for better bonding?
Thanks for any and all answers.
Geoff.

They say pannel bond (3m 8115) is not to be used for anything structural. However, when I replaced the front cab mounts on my 51 F1, I drilled holes and welded through the holes like spot welds and used pannel bond to help secure them. I also did the same to the rocker pannels. When I replaced the front portion of the floor and toe boards, I only used pannel bond.

Prior to doing my floor and mounts, I used pannel bond on a couple of scrap pieces of metal and let them cure a couple of days. I tried to pry them apart but was unsuccessful. The only way to break them apart was to heat them up with a torch.

So, this is tough stuff. I would always recommend welding, but there are a lot of occasions where pannel bond is Tuff enough to hold sheetmetal together.

Remember this, the front cab mounts support the entire front of the cab and the rear of the fenders and hood. Both the cab mounts and the firewall are structural members of the cab which can affect the windshield and door openings.

That being said, these old trucks are strong and tough as he'll. They are also Korean war era trucks with very loose tolerances.

Good luck with your project.
Dan

For piece of mind would it not be possible to bolt the brackets on (or big pop rivets) ?

minimum I'd consider would be close fit bolts/nuts just like the rivets were..i.e. bolt holes with no slop... I would NOT even consider panel bond for anything structural...there is a lot of weight on the cab front
