Have a 98 Explorer Sport 4.0l. Was losing antifreeze some how and found out that I had an internal leak due to both heads being cracked. Repairs covered by my warranty but was wondering what could cause both heads to crack and is this uncommon?
I have the ohv. Have 97,000 miles and hopefully will get many more after the repair is done. Is there anything out of the ordinary that my mechanic should being aware of while replacing the heads? He seems to know fords pretty well.
I had my heads replaced on my 4.0L OHV in the 95k mileage range. If there is a physical crack, you will need to get new heads - not just remachined.
I never did find out what cracked my heads - I assume abuse and negligence by the previous owner. The cracks were between the intake and exhaust valve on the rear most cylinder on each side.
Replacing the heads isn't overly complicated, just time consuming.
The 4.0L has alum heads and will easily warp or crack with any over heating. I had a thermostat to stick on my 4.0 and caused a head to cracked. $1500 repair job. The mechanic recommended to change thermostats about every 70k miles.
