Some here will frown upon putting LEDs in OEM buckets as it will blind oncoming traffic. Some here claim to have found certain LED brands don't do this and have adequate cut-off in OEM housings. I'm sure they'll chime in with their own experiences. Others convert to seal beam LEDs and the lighting is amazing from what I've seen and heard. I plan to go this route eventually.
I've never seen a complete kit for converting. I have replaced EVERY bulb on my truck with an LED, except for the headlights and dash cluster. I found quality LED bulbs from superbrightleds.com and replaced the Ford factory turn signal flasher with a solid state unit so I wouldnt have to mess with load resisters or hyper-flashing of the turn signals. I've been very happy with them for 6 years.
After the factory and first set of aftermarket replacement headlight assemblies turned yellow and cloudy from UV damage, I installed a set of Spyder projector assemblies with halogen bulbs. They might be ok with LED bulbs since the projectors would properly focus the LED beam, but they are already MUCH better beam patterns and output than the original lights, so I've kept them as halogen. I too, hate when I'm blinded by someone who puts LED or HID bulbs in a halogen housing that improperly diffuses and focuses the beam, and I don't want to be "that guy."
^^^ these guys are right on the money. My used truck came with 3-sided LED headlight bulbs that did not mimic a halogen filament by adequately centering the light source - the focus was poor and I got flashed by drivers alot. Out they came.
I have '05 housings, so my bulb size is different, but same idea - try to find an LED bulb with a 2-sided design, that better centers the light source. This is what I'm currently trying out:
There are 9007 equivalents from LASFIT as well. The focus is pretty good, with a nice cutoff area on low beams. I did have to adjust the headlight housings a bit downward after installing, but a minor adjustment. Interested to see what you find with your installation.
I have the cheap LED bulb units in both our trucks...one with the older two piece headlight assemblies, and the other with the newer one piece headlight assemblies. I've had them installed for several years now, and it made a huge difference...and I've not had one person flash me thinking they were too bright. It's important to get the bulb units that mimic the halogen wire bulb as aforementioned...
