51 Mirrors

In another thread about 51 keys I posted this pic of my recently acquired 51 Five Star Extra

and someone commented on the mirrors.
Here are some pics of the mirrors, adjustable six ways to Sunday.
Were there any "standard" stock mirrors, or did they run the gamut like heaters? Apologies for the bolt used as a pin! I probably should fix that.

Hi Jonas thanks for posting. Yeah that was me! Im fascinated with mirrors and accessories in general. Those are actually pretty unique looking. Im guessing that was like a double jointed feature built in for extra view-ability?

Yes there are standard mirrors from Ford as pictured in this NOS example below they were for a range of trucks not just F-1s maybe all the way up to F-7 and F-8 but Im not sure at least F-6. For 51-52 they came a bit larger than previous 48-50 but were otherwise identical. I think 6" if Im not mistaken is the diameter. There were tons of aftermarket options as trucks almost universally had the same or similar mirrors across brands for decades. I have one Yankee Mirror. They all look basically similar.

Interestingly (since you said you were interested in mirrors) the mirror arms originally on my 52 panel were shorter than the stock example you are showing and not telescoping:

I'm using telescoping arms now meant to be used on a Willis Jeep. They look very much like the stock pickup examples in your picture. They came with 5 inch round mirrors. If they were 6 inch, I might use them. For now I'm using cheapo rectangular mirror heads in the interest of having better vision.

Hi Jim, that is correct the panel van had 9” mirror arms. Probably a better and more appropriate look and function for a basic F-1 in my opinion. That’s why you’ll rarely ever see factory correct mirrors in period photos. They were universally applied and produced primarily for the stake trucks that needed the extra length.

I actually have a pair of reproduction 9” panel van mirror arms that someone fabricated. However the passenger side aren’t made at the correct angle. The bottom bolt hole needs to be re-drilled at a better angle relative to the top attachment point.
