Was having brake problems on my 92 Explorer 4X4 EB....ABS light on, warped rotors, shot pads, etc... So decided to change everything. Replaced brake rotors, repacked bearings, new pads, new shoes. Went to bleed the brakes because the ABS light was still on and started on the r/r drum, opened up the bleeder valve, had the wife step on the pedal, and nothing came out.....no fluid, no air, no nothing!!! Thought it might be a fluke so I tried the l/r drum and the same thing.....nothing. What gives???? Bad RABS valve or RABS module causing this? What could cause this? Please help!!!!
Did you happen to replace the wheel cylinders? Any time I replaced the rear brakes on my 92, I had to replace them as well.
Check the wheel cylinders. All you need to do is pull one of the actuator pins and see if it is coated in brake fluid. If so, repalce them cause they are leaking. If everything is cool there, then it might be the master cylinder or a block in the line. If you have the stock brake lines still, then there is a good chance that they need to be replaced. Disconnect the rubber lines from the wheel cylinder and see if any fluid comes out. If it does, then we are back to the wheel cylinders. Replace them.
A company called Phoenix makes a brake bleeding tool that will allow you to do the job without having anyone pushing on the brake pedal. You can hook it to the bleeding valve and bleed the brakes in reverse, i.e. from the drum to the master cylinder pushing the fluid through. Hope that helps. Keep us up to date on what you find.
No, I checked the wheel cylinders when I changed the shoes and everything was nice and dry. I'm leaning towards a stuck RABS valve, now. from everything I'm reading here on this forum. Seems to be a common problem but don't want to change it unless I have to. I haven't really checked the lines (could be crushed) but hardly seems possible that I would get absolutely nothing out of the bleeder valves. My ABS light is on and I can't get any codes to flash from the computer so I was thinking maybe the module is bad and sending signals to close the valve. Could that be a problem?
If I remember correctly... I had to have the RABS actuator valve reaplced on my 92... had this done more then 4 years ago, and I don't have the truck anymore. This could be the source of your problems. From what I have read, any time the ABS light comes on and stays lit, the system is not working properly or at all. From what you are saying it could be a stuck valve in the unit. Sorry, but I don't know how to check that one. Hopefully someone else will step up and let you know what to check.
