361 looking for options
Hello y'all, I have a 76 c900 with a 361 4bbl and a Allison 540, just barely rebuilt. I Love the trans, motor doesn't put out enough power. What do I need to change? I would like to put in a 390 or something with the ability to get more power. The motor has 22k on it. It was a fire fighting brush truck.

You could find a 391FT that would bolt right in. Some improvement. You could find a later 429 automatic c series and bring that over. Or you could explore a diesel swap with transmission. Now you're at the point of spending so much that you'd be better off trading up to a newer truck equipped as you need.

Thanks for the info! Didn't know what I could put in front of the Allison. Getting the truck was a once in a lifetime roadtrip. Never gonna sell the truck, it's one of my daily driver's. I will start looking for a gasser. I work on diesels all day. I have zero interest in owning one.

What rear end is in that C900? You may be able to change to a different gearing and getter better results without the engine swap. You could also swap a set of FE heads on the 361 to increase the compression a little and that may help as well, but then you'd have to change the intake and exhaust as well.
