I have a 64 Ford F250 with a 223 I6 engine. Till a year ago it ran great then I screwed with it and have had problems every since. I had installed an electric fuel pump (could not find a mechanical at first) and all went well for a while then it would unexpectedly die while going down the road. I replaced the carb with a new Autolite 1100 (or 1101?) and then learned I had a grounding problem with the electric pump. Switched to a mechanical one and now I have problems with fuel starving (backfires and misses while at highway speeds). I know its not the timing and I have replaced spark plugs, wires, and coil. How big or what size of carb should this have?
The one thing I haven't checked to see is if the cam lobe is wore out for the mechanical fuel pump (common?).
Have you tried adjusting the idle mixture screw? Turn it in all the way carefully not to damage the end and turn back out 1-1/2 turns for a starting point. Turn it in or out slightly and listen to the engine. It should drop in RPM's as you turn it in. You want to stop as it drops. Then back out a little. Have you put a fuel pressure guage on the fuel line coming from the pump. These era engines like 3-4 lbs pressure. Are the plugs brown or sooty black? That's a indicator of the mixture. make sure the choke isn't binding and sticking closed. Have you messed with the float setting? That will make it run bad. If you've removed the carb off the intake, make sure you don't have any vacuumn leaks at the base of the carb. if it's sucking in air , it will run bad. Take a spray bottle with water and spray around the base of the carb and if the RPM's pick up, you have a leak. You might also want to check the dist. vac advance to see if it's working. a few suggestions...........
I'll freely admit my ignorance, where is the idle mixture adjusting screw? My Haynes book doen't even address it. Is it the screw near the base of the carb on the side nearest the valve cover?
Or do you know of a sight that deals with this in great detail?
I'm going by the pic in my parts book and it shows it on a slight angle in the base below the fuel bowl, near one of the mounting holes. The pic doesn't orientate which way the carb faces. it's on the opposite side of the throttle linkage.
