1989 F150 Issues
I did some work on it last summer and life issues have kept me from getting back to working on it until now.
I had a terrible leak with the valve cover gaskets. To summarize, I replaced what I could while I had it apart.
The work I did was new hoses, new thermostat, new gaskets on the valve covers and plenum. I did a throttle position sensor and a few other things that are slipping my mind.
My issues: No real heat through the heater, engine warms up fine even when it's cold outside. Also it is a little finicky to start, it takes a bit of grinding and then it's good, sometimes I'll let off and the second time I hit the key it goes right away. And finally, I'm having issues with the starter again. It stuck when my wife was driving it and it cooked the hot battery cable. To address this issue I replaced the starter and all was well for a few months then it started sticking again (keeps on running, toggle the key and it will stop). So I replaced the key switch and all was well for a few months... now again today it acted up.
So please folks, chime in with your wisdom and experience.
Thanks in advance
If the starter sticks on again, pop the hood and jump out and unhook that little slip on wire from the fender mounted solenoid. if that doesn't stop the starter give the solenoid a few karate chops to hopefully unstick the solenoid.
Assuming you still have the stock starter setup on your 1989, the only way the power can get to the starter is through the fender mounted solenoid. So if the starter sticks on troubleshoot it by first pulling that little slip on wire off the fender mounted solenoid, if that stops the starter you are still getting power from your ignition switch. If pulling that little wire off doesn't stop the starter the fender mounted solenoid is defective.
