Anyone think it possible to rebuild a clockspring? I have an 05 Excursion that has cruise control and audio/climate buttons on the steering wheel. A while ago my horn would honk on its own at times, or if I hit the horn it would stay on. From searching it seemed it was a clockspring issue but it stopped doing it after a bit and worked normally. Then I didn’t drive the truck for a few weeks and now no buttons on the wheel work, nor does the horn. I haven’t been able to find the clockspring for this combo anywhere. The only clocksprings that are available are for steering wheels that only have cruise control.
I’ve thought about trying to find a cruise control only wheel from a salvage yard. Any and all ideas are welcome!
Fixing the clock spring is not something that won't be easy or something you want to repair.
The reason is the airbags also run on that flexible ribbon cable. When I took one apart, it
looked to be mylar with copper traces. I am not sure if I still have a dead one on hand or not.
I look during the day and if I find it I will get some photos of if being disassembled.
Yeah, I pretty much figured the internal part was gonna be a loss. Weird thing is I don’t have an airbag light so I assume that part is still working. It’s just the horn and cruise.
What sucks is the clockspring for the steering wheel I have, which also has audio and AC controls, is available for the 05 and later trucks…but it seems my Excursion has the 04 and earlier clockspring. Which I can’t find anywhere.
So I guess my options are to buy a cruise only older steering wheel or a newer style truck steering wheel. All I care about is the airbag and horn…and I guess cruise control…so I’ll probably go the cruise only wheel route
Thanks! That’s the one that works with the “only cruise control” steering wheels. Unfortunately it doesn’t work for the steering wheels with audio/AC controls
Yep…so far I’ve only been able to find clock springs that work for vehicles with ONLY cruise control, or a clock spring that does work for cruise, audio, and climate but it’s for the 05 and later trucks. That one has an 8 pin connection vs my 6 pin. I could probably make it work, but it’s over $220 vs $40 for the cruise only clock spring. I’ve found a couple cruise only steering wheels on eBay for $90
Actually if I could just get the connector that fits into the cruise only clockspring I could just re-wire my steering wheel…
I don’t care about the steering wheel audio or climate control buttons, I just want the horn to work and the cruise control would be nice
I would talk directly to a Ford dealer, possibly ANWB, and ask if they can do a nationwide search in their parts system. Occasionally, we did that at work.
While the dealer and the warehouse may be out, some dealer across the 48 states may have one in stock. We would have to pay the shipping cost, but the in-stock dealer would ship the part to our dealer. The part cost would also be higher along with the shipping, but we would get the part.
Yep, I’m friend’s with several service and parts people at my Ford dealership. They checked for me and there are zero available nationwide. It seems they were discontinued several years ago, so what little were in stock at the time were snatched up
Yep, have been checking on eBay for the past couple weeks. It’s all cruise control only or the newer 8-pin clockspring for the 05 and later trucks.
I found a black leather cruise only steering wheel for $120, and a cruise only clockspring for $40. I’m cool with that as I’ve never used the audio or climate buttons on the steering wheel anyway. 👍
Thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions! I’m sure I’ll be back with a thread titled “bought cruise only steering wheel and clockspring…can’t get them to work” 😂
Just to head off the it does work thread, try to match the steering wheel to your year. In different years ford used different resistor values for the cruise control.
