Quit dumping def in until it asks for it.
There have been reports that if the truck does not see it going down it will get confused.
Supposedly that has been fixed on the newer trucks, but maybe not.
It gives you a 400 mile warning so you will be hard pressed to not be able to locate any def in the US in 400 miles.
Last resort if you cannot find any def within 400 miles I hear recycled Mountain Dew supposedly works. 🤷🏼♂️😂

All these guys myself included was afraid of running out of DEF and the truck going into limp mode. I had the scare of my life when I got the 500 miles till the end of fun. I added2 boxes and the mile counter kept counting down. Then all of a sudden it went away. Sigh of relief. I used to keep mine topped off and I decided that the best way to keep fresh DEF in the truck was to use all I could in the tank and put new in it. There is no reason to buy it at every fuel stop. There is a wallmart around every corner and they have lots of it. I let the message come on grab a box and fill it.
While I have read of guys having problems filling their DEF tanks before the 500 mile warning, I never had one and I used to fill up mine every 3k to 4k miles. This last time though, I looked at my DEF level info and it said under half, she took 4 gallons I believe. No problems.
I just got one that uses DEF, last one had a tank, but didn't use it. It read half tank, so filled it at the truck stop, 4 gallons and change. Wont know how long it will last until I drive more, but not expecting to need any for a few months.
I'm with Dave. It's very very rare that I ever see the 500 miles to empty. ( I think twice in 11 years of using DEF)
If I'm at a station with DEF at the pump, I look at my screen, If it's showing Half, I top off.
In the 350,000 miles I driven a DEF equipped truck, No problems doing that

right but this thread is for us blind folks that have def guages that always show full.
full and it takes a few gallons to top off .
concern is if the guage does not work correctly to indicate full, 3/4ths, half, 1/4, etc….why would it work correctly to warn of 500 count down to wrench or reduced power mode.
My ‘19 shows full for a LONG time too. But after a few thousand miles it starts dropping. I fill it at 1/2 tank indicated and it normally takes a bit over 3 gallons to top it off.
Give it some time. If it only takes a gallon to top it off then it really was “full”.
Just got a 500 miles to empty warning and hoping the sensor isn't messed up since the truck was topped off July 4 weekend. No way it chomped through a tank in 2000 miles. unloaded + easy highway miles.

You make the statement "those of us blind folks" like it's common for this gauge to not move when the DEF is depleting. That is not normal and something on your truck needs to be fixed under warranty.
If you truly feel you have an issue then I would suggest you fill the tank to full because we know the capacity of the tank. We then know for sure how much DEF is in the tank. Drain all but one gallon from the tank and watch the gauge for a few days. If your gauge does not drop to the expected level or somewhat in the ballpark, (because we know these gauges are not truly accurate), for what you "know" is in the tank then time for a visit to the dealer for diagnosis.
