Another gvw question

My 00' 250 sd ccsb 4x4 6.8 gvw is 8800lbs pretty standard.
in 2005 the gvw was raised to between 8800-9600 gvw. What changed, I understand heavier springs, 2x vs 4x diesel vs gas, lb vs sb etc, 800 lb seems a pretty large increase in one year.
in all the previous years of the sd the configurations were the same.
any ideas?

A change in springs can do a LOT for GVW from that alone. I had a '95 GMC that had a GVW of 8600 lbs, the other option was 7700 lbs that year. Difference was mostly in the springs.

Could also be different rims, I think that may have been the years they started putting 18" wheels on trucks that used to come standard with 16" wheels. That can also have a profound impact on GVW.

I am not educated enough on the changes of those years to tell you what all contributed to the change, but there are a LOT of different ways to get an 800lb GVW increase on a factory truck.

Just thought I'd mention your question is about GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) which is what the manufacture says the truck can weigh fully loaded.
GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) is what your truck actually weighs, loaded or not.
As an example if you weighed your truck and it was 6,000 pounds then your GVW would be 6,000 pounds but your GVWR is still 8800.

Gvwr is what I'm trying to understand,. There were several changes made to help raise payload capacity, besides springs was rim size, still a lot of grey area when trying to understand manufacturers methodology.. at least in my mind.

Axles play a big role in gvwr. The heaviest springs do no good if axle can’t support load with out failure. Also frame and suspension mounting and brakes. It all works together

Just changed on paper, if you truck was an F350 SRW of the same year it would have a 9,900 lb rating, only physical difference is the F350 has a 2 inch taller block in the rear.

The rear spring pack rating definitely was upped for 2005, as well as running 17" wheels instead of 16" allowing tires with higher weight ratings.

On my 2003 and 2004 F250s the 16" factory tire size had a load rating of 2680lbs each. On my 2005 and up F250s and F350s the 17" factory tire size is rated at 3195lbs

Never seen a factory sized 16" E rated tire with a load rating that low, the rear axle rating would excede that.

They were 225/75R16. That was the tire size on my 2003 and 2004 F250 door sticker. 235/85R16 was I believe the other size rated at 3,040lbs.
