92 F150 Towing

I have a 92 F150 4X4 and want to tow a small stock trailer max. 5000 lb. However transmission is 3 speed auto with overdrive - no electronic override and gear selector is 1-D-OD (no 3rd gear).OD is not recommended for towing. Can the transmission be modified or can I pull in OD? Thanks for any advice on this.

92 F150 Towing

I had a 93 E 150 van that had a 5.0 AOD Trans and I pulled a 5000# boat with it. It performed OK as long as you aren't in a big hurry and don't have too many hills. The only thing is the engine and trans got tired before thier time. The trans had to be rebuilt at 65K miles and the engine was using alot of oil at 100k. I had 3.55 gears which I changed to 4.10 at 40k miles.(too late to save the trans). As far as OD towing I was always told to tow in whatever gear required the least amount of pedal. Before I installed the 4.10 gears I couldn't even think about towing in OD.Hope this helps

Put the selector in D, this will run the trans as though you didn't have OD
