Knocking/missing
This truck was a ramp side airport truck so it has little rust and only 118xxx km’s. But unfortunately a lot of idle hours. I took it to a garage to have it looked over and was told it wouldn’t need much to be road worthy. I then decided I would flip this truck.
fast forward…
truck would miss on multiple cylinders and coolant was being leaked somewhere and it wasn’t on the ground. Replaced the intake manifold/thermostat gaskets and replaced the plugs and that issue seems to be fixed as the coolant level isn’t decreasing. Not getting any codes for a misfire.
it currently got a parasitic drain on the battery that is coming from the audio control module. Replaced the stereo in it to trouble shoot and will update if this fixes the problem as I’m sick of pulling the fuse or disconnecting the battery when I’m done with it.
Done a oil change and the dip stick is showing correct oil levels.
this truck now starts and a loud “tick tick tick…” is heard from the driver side. After about 30seconds to a minute it goes away and the truck is fine. Take it for a drive and get it going at speeds more than 80km once come back to slower speeds and idle speeds it makes a loud knocking and sounds like it’s missing on multiple cylinders. I have a video of it and will post if we are able to?
I have unplugged the vct solenoids and it do seem to make a slight change but don’t fix it. While it’s in this little episode of bucking and knocking it won’t throw any codes but if you rev it up it will go away and idle without a hitch.
thanks in advance

thanks for the reply, sorry for my delayed one. It’s the 5.4l. Just replaced the vvt solenoids and didn’t help. However when I hauled the valve covers off it look very dry and ALOT of crud. I’ll attach pictures.
I can’t recall when I started to hear this tick noise that is definitely coming from the valve components but I’m thinking it may have been noticed after I done an oil change, now it wasn’t synthetic oil and I believe it’s just the basic white oil filter. Can this contribute to the problem? I currently do have sea foam in the oil port to help clean it out before I drain the oil and replace that and the filter.
It’s weird, I start the truck and it’s the tick tick tick noise, press the gas and it idles smooth and quiet. Drive it and you can get the tick louder as you press the gas. Potentially needing the cam phasers done?
