Well in an effort to hunt down a possible exhaust restriction I removed the CAT on the Excursion to see how it would sound (2000 6.8L v10). The rig has the SPD Y pipe fix that was much needed and a Flowmaster 50 series on it that I haven't been impressed with at all since I installed it. Now with the cat gone it is obnoxiously loud and has a horrible rasp under acceleration. I went ahead and ordered a flowmaster flow FX 3" glass pack resonator and got that installed upstream of the muffler where the CAT used to be. It definitely took a lot of the rasp out and does sound better but is still way to loud under acceleration/ load and will probably drive me nuts once I hook a trailer to it. Anyone have any recommendations on a solid good flowing exhaust setup? I would love to order the banks kit from headers back but that is some big bucks and it looks like you still utilize your factory CAT.
Skip the Banks exhaust, it’s basically the same as the factory setup with a slightly freer flowing muffler. But the headers are top shelf!
I searched every sound clip I could find for a muffler on my V-10 and the winner was the Aerotubine (same as the Jones) 3030XL, the XL is the one with the built in resonator which is much more mellow than the rasp prone 3030. unfortunately my 3030 snapped off the inlet nozzle due to really crappy install job at a local shop when I was working a lot of OT, eventually I will weld it backup and reinstall it. When you saw my EX in WY it was running the factory cat with the factory exhaust but with no muffler, it’s a little louder than the 3030XL but isn’t raspy, it’s obvious that the cat does much of the sound control on these 6.8s.
I'm running a Flow master super 10 and it is crazy loud on acceleration. I'm 52 and love it because it reminds me of all the loud exhausts we heard as teenagers riding the drag. Each to their own. IF you want quiet exhaust, this is NOT the one for you. Also no kitty! Just some nostalgia in my old age! I only drive it on the weekends, my wife just rolls her eyes!
I ordered a universal 3in cat from Summit racing and have been thoroughly happy with it. The exhaust doesn't stink anymore and it was only $99. Best of all, there was a review by another 2000 Ex V10 owner. Based on that alone, I pulled the trigger and its been on for 4mos without any issues.
So we can talk about gas engine emissions deletes but not diesel emissions deletes then????
Guess the EPA is strong -arming people, sueing business out of business, and putting people in jail about gas emissions deletes,,,, yet.

haha figured this would come up. To be fair if you read the first part of my post it states the cat was removed for diagnostic purposes to find a possible exhaust restriction. I have no intention of running it on the road this way. I'm simply using the the resonator as a test pipe to finish my diagnosis of possible issues stated in another thread.
I had my cat swiped from my ex that was already missing its muffler. I slapped on a cheap 46 state legal pipe and it was still painfully loud. I asked the local parts place "what do you have with a 3" ID? and got a Thrust glass pack. Its probably on par with what it was with the old Cat only noise level, maybe slightly quieter.
