I have a 05 Excursion I need to cross country tow. Unfortunately I don't have access to a trailer to get it off the ground, but fortunately I do have access to a tow bar that is rated for 10k from a buddy of mine.
My question is: Can I just drop the driveshafts ratchet them gals up and be on my merry way? Will the axles leak with the removal of the driveshafts? Any input would be appreciated.
^^^this. Personally, after having set up my X for flat towing behind an RV, I’d just pull the entire rear driveshaft. They are heavy and there’s no real great way to tie one up (at least I don’t think so) for a long haul. It’d be easier to just pull it and not have to worry about it coming loose.
i second removing the shaft completely, My dad and I pulled a blown motor from a dodge 2500 for a friend of his, it was very much not taken care of and actually had rust on the cylinder walls, long story short they disconnected and tied up the shaft tail to flat tow it across town to a engine shop, well, the shaft fell down from the front, caught the ground and launched the rear half of the truck up in the air, cratered the truck bed upwards from below and broke all kinds of stuff, launched the old motor from the bed onto the sidewalk where it tumbled a short distance, all before it had even made it a mile. He had told them just before they left that he strongly recommended they go rent a u-haul trailer, they ended up scrapping the truck after that.

Common sense goes a long way, you disconnect it from the rear not the front, it will turn if you leave it connected to the axle.

You misunderstand, they did disconnect the rear, but then the front vibrated out of the back of the transmission, and fell down, and well, became a ballistic trebuchet, or catapult.
