1995 F350 7.3 pstroke Dual tanks, auxiliary switch on dash. I last filled up both tanks, gauge showed full. As soon as I used some fuel out of the rear tank the gauge dropped to 1/4. I switched to the front tank (or so I thought) and it showed 1/4. At this point I switched back and forth and I don't know which tank I am on now. Anyway, 2 days later the engine shuts down as if it is out of fuel, switch didn't work. Sure enough, fuel pump. Replaced it but the switch still doesn't work, now it is completely dead. Fuse appears to be okay.. Sending unit or switch? Help? Is this a job a novice can tackle or should I take it to a shop.. Thanks! This is my first time here so hope you can give me some good advice..
The only time I've had a problem similar to this was when the AC pump ate itself and was blowing the fuse (same circuit) - not much help if your fuse is good, though.
Thanks Hosedog! My AC was blowing intermittent prior to this and just quit giving me cold, not too long before this happened. Could be there is a tie, I better take a closer look at that fuse! Thanks much!
Well, the fuse is fine but it is a 20 instead of a 15 due to the camper shell brake light being attached to it. I started up the truck and turned on the A/C.. the clutch started smoking so I shut it down. New A/C Clutch $191 at Checker..but that doesn't solve my fuel gauge problem.. I can live without A/C for the next 4 months here in AZ.. hmmmmmmmm
If the AC clutch is smokin' (mine was), the pump is probably toast. That means you have more to replace than just that! Hence the higher bill, which included a later model pump.
Good luck!
I'm not sure if it was the clutch or the belt that was smokin, either way it isn't good. Thanks for the info though.. where are yo in Northern Idaho? Has to be getting mighty cold up there about now..
