I've tried searching but must not be using the correct words.
79 Broncos. Bought it without the ignition key. Local carquest has key/tumbler in stock but how do I remove the tumbler from the ignition switch without the original key?
In automotive lingo it’s usually called a lock cylinder.
You might be able to find it more easily under that name.
But for our trucks to remove the cylinder needs the key and a paper clip to fit in the small hole. But if you don’t have a lock cylinder then you just need to install the new one. Correct?
Or do you have an old cylinder in the ignition switch with no key?
Sorry, I see you clearly stated you have the old cylinder still installed. I hate doing this from my phone where once I am composing an answer I can’t go back and review the question until I’ve posted or backed out of it.
The way I understand it is that to get it out without a key and without destroying the ignition switch you have to get a locksmith.
You can attempt to drill out the cylinder, but I believe it’s fairly easy to bugger up the switch if you’re not careful.
Best of luck…

Thanks for the fast response. Someone else that can't sleep. Yes lock cylinder is in the switch body and I don't have the key. Also, I understand about answering on the phone. You can't go back and reread the post.
Yes you can drill it out, and yes you can do it wrong and mess up the ignition switch body part. Yes both parts can be bought individually or the switch can be bought with a new tumbler/key. What about getting a locksmith to cut one? Take the ignition switch assembly OUT, it is easy. Tap loose the ignition switch body silver outer dash side lock ring (with 3 tabs...pick a tab tap tap). Small flat tip screwdriver, tap tap tap in one grove and then unthread it and remove. Unplug switch and take to locksmith to cut a key. Cheap faster easy.
If you just have to drill it out, do a search for it on here, (replace ignition switch lock cylinder), it is covered in here somewhere about the drilling out process.
Your door key doesn't work in it? If you don't have any keys for it and no one has changed the set, pull a door lock cylinder out and have a locksmith make a key with the number on the lock.
I totally forgot our switches can be removed without removing the cylinder first. The Early Broncos have a bezel that is not removable until the cylinder is removed. Only then can you do the push-n-twist to get the switch out.
In that case black & blue, just do what they said and pull it out, disconnect it from the wiring connector (after disconnecting the battery of course) and pop on down to your nearest locksmith.
Assuming you still have one in your area of course!
They're not disappearing as fast as radiator repair shops, or cobblers, but they're not as plentiful as they once were around here at least.
Wonder if that's why so many of our trucks get stolen. Have a cylinder w/key, slip the old one out, put yours in and away you go. I have two kill switch's and a locking hood. Hope it will slow them down some.
This is easy peasy. With a nail or pin, press and hold the little button above the key slot, turn all the way left past the ACC ON position. The tumbler will pop out.
Yes WITH the key its easy to pop the tumbles out, WITHOUT the key NOT so much. Like I said, take the ignition out and get a lock smith to cut you a key, cheap and easy. You can pop a door lock also and the other other side of the ignition key cut for them.
