Steering gear help

Hi all, I have a 72 f11. The steering is tight, but the radius is so bad. Like can’t turn around in a cul de sac bad. I noticed it doesn’t even come close to hitting the stops. It has power steering from the factory but the box wasn’t. Anyways it also has a plate between it and the frame(frames possibly cracked I’ll look. Is there anything I can do to fix the steering in the box? I think I read it’s a post 73 box. Did they use less turns? Thanks

I didnt think there was any factory power steering on 4x4s until gen 6 trucks. Not 100% positive on f100s though. Ive never done a power steering swap except an EPAS that I have going on right now on a f250. Here is a link on the f100 subject. https://www.fordification.com/tech/p...69F100-4WD.htm. Looking at the pictures in the link, it looks like you have the wrong pitman arm on your truck. Not sure how much of a difference it would make though. It looks like a drop pitman arm on your truck and the one they use out of a f150 in the link is straight and possibly shorter. Someone with some experience on the matter will probably get it all straightened out. I think true power steering started in the middle of 77, but dont quote me on it. That could possibly be a f250 4x4 steering gear in your truck. Hang in there and good luck.

73'-76 4wd's got power assist linkage PS with using a manual box. They got true integral PS in 77 with F-250's getting it mid 77. Notice that that box has a rag joint. 4wd's never came with rag joints, only u-joints on the steering shaft. Also, notice the prefix on top of the cap. It is C5 or C6 which leads me to think this is a 65 or 66+ full size car box never meant to be used for a 4wd as it doesn't have the full articulation a 4wd needs.

I had read it was from a Lincoln of that era or something in another forum. Is there anything that can be done? Or just another box?

The box location is completely wrong.
Notice the extreme angle of the draglink in relation to the tie rod. It should never be that far out of the same plane of movement because it’s not going to have a linear action and wastes some of the rotation just to move the draglink forward and back instead of sideways.
It also looks like the draglink might actually be binding on the pitman arm. That might reduce the available box travel even more.

Because the box is right over the top of the tie rod you can’t shorten up the pitman arm enough to achieve proper alignment.
Would need to either move the box farther back, which usually gets in the way of other components, or farther forward.
But then you would need to reverse the rotation of the steering box by converting the input section and put the pitman arm on 180 degrees around.

Not sure if that can be done to your particular gearbox, but it’s a common thing to do on the F150 four-wheel-drive box to convert it for use in the early Broncos.
