Dashboard Wiring... Help...

I am about to tare into (1988 4X4) my dashboard to fix gauges and ligths. They are not working correctly. The tach reads very low, like the needle starts way below 0. The gas gauge is acting the same way. I think I will run into corrosion and bad contacts and what not. Any advice at this time would be helpful.

Thanks,
19988Taz

Welcome to FTE 1988Taz,

Well...to do the job correctly, you should have an automotive repair manual to assist you with this project! Also be patient!

repair manual and patients? Not as easy as I thought (lol). When I was in the Navy I worked on A4's, A7's, A6e's, and F-18's along with a host of others jets, so the Ranger should be farly e-a-s-y. The only problem is that in the Navy we had GOOD manuals to work from. Where could I get a GOOD wiring diagram of the dashboard and what the readings should be? Thanks agian for your help.

Dang.

Taz, as you have probably already noticed the schematics are not hard to come by - but the specifications are.

In fact, I am striking completely out.

Bummer. That doesn't happen very often, let me do some more checking and get back to you . .

Try doing a quick check that I discovered on my "86 4 banger.
Put the key in the ignition and start the truck. Look at the gauges and slowly twist the key in the ignition one way and then the other. Make sure you dont activate the starter or turn off the truck doing this. If the gauges change when you slightly move the key then your ignition switch is worn out.
After I bought my truck the temp, oil pressure and fuel gauges were intermittent as well as the wipers. I did not figure this out untill I had trouble with the sterio too and then it dawned on me. I have not replaced mine, but out here in California, at every junk yard there is a guy selling used ignition switches in the parking lot. Along side the tuck and roll guys.
