We went on a short trip this last weekend and on the way home, I had no less than 4 people pull directly in front of me. We decided that we were going to get a dashcam as protection from all the people that seem to be too stupid to understand that big trucks/rvs can't stop like a ford focus.
I've started looking at dashcams since my return and there are so many out there, it's easy to get lost in it all. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the Ford OEM dashcam and can speak to the quality and installation of it? It looks like it has everything I would need, but as all things OEM, I'm a bit worried about it not being a quality product with a higher than needed pricetag. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Couple of my must have requirements:
1. Unobtrusive install and clean look that doesn't clutter up windshield
2. Always on
3. High quality video recording. I would like something that with the ability to easily read license plates (4k?)
4. Optional, but desired, ability to instantly download clips to my phone/tablet/cloud drive as well as on card (in case confiscated by police)
If I'm missing something above, feel free to set me straight. I'm learning here.
I have the Thinkware F200 camera installed in my Truck. I did not purchase the Ford OEM (which is Thinkware brand). You can purchase Thinkware from their site, Amazon etc. I really like the one I have. I recently had to use a captured video to file a claim against another driver for cutting over and hitting me. The video quality was very good, and the App interface was user friendly.
There are many other brands.....do a little research and you will find what meets your needs.

Been using a Garmin NuviCam since 2015. Really nice clear 1080P that records position, time and speed where a lot of dash cams just put a time stamp on. It also has crash save in the event of a collision. Has up to date maps too, unlike the 2020 maps in the latest Ford updates.

There are a lot of good camera's out there. I got a Kenwood from Best Buy. Not too expensive and has a port for an optional rear facing camera for the idiots behind you. For an unobtrusive install you place the camera behind the rearview mirror on the passenger side. Since that part of the windshield is already obscured you don't loose anything and the mirror blocks any lit up screen the camera may have.
On a side note, I have noticed fewer people pull out in front of me with the DRLs turned on. HD DRLs can be intimidating. But some, alas, are too stupid to be intimidated by a 5 ton gross truck doing 65 mph... so then there's that.
Camera screen blocked from drivers view by rear view mirror.
for her MKS. Its a mirror mounted 1296P HD front and rear camera that straps over your existing mirror. It can be hardwired in as well. Haven't installed it yet since her car is in the body shop after she got ran into by a truck while she was waiting to back out of her parking space and the person who hit her flew out of her parking spot without looking. Put a hole the size of a baseball in her rear quarter. If she had this camera at the time she could have used the video to prove she was not moving when she was hit, as the insurance company is trying to put part of the blame on her.
Once I get it installed, if I like it I might get one myself. It uses GPS so it records time, location and speed, any of which can be turned on or off.
I just installed the BlackVue DR590X. It checks off 1, 2, some of 3 and 4 on your list... it's a good picture, but not good enough to be able to read license plates... Being that this one is the "entry level" model, I would imagine the 2 models above it (which offer 4K and 60FPS) would possibly allow you to be able to read license plates... Mine is listed at 1080P (which is a good picture) and 30FPS... When I am sitting in the driver seat, I can't see any of the dash cam...

Thanks Chad! Based on your feedback I decided to go with the DR750X Plus. Looked at the 4K (DR900x Plus) but the videos I saw didn't really show all that much difference in HD vs 4k and this 750 was 60FPS vs 30. I'll let you know when I get it installed and what I think of it. Appreciate everyone's feedback!!

I'll be interested to hear what you think about it. I am wondering if by simply going to 60FPS if some details (such as license plates) will be made a little clearer...
