2018 6.2 Starting Issues

Hi everyone,

I have a 2018 XL 4x4 short bed crew cab with the 6.2 engine; 20K miles on it and I've owned it since new, it's had a pretty easy life so far. I've noticed an issue that seems to be appearing with greater frequency as time goes on. I'll drive the truck for an hour or so on the highway, stop, then get back in it after a few hours and it hesitates to start. To clarify, it cranks just fine, but it acts like it's misfiring and has trouble actually starting. I recently hauled a trailer with a total weight of about 4500lbs. After stopping, the hesitation issue happened and it was the worst it's ever been. The engine struggled to start so badly that the starter engaged and disengaged several times.

I've been looking around and it sounds like maybe it's the fuel pump? Is there a way to override the auto-start feature (keyed, not push-button)? I don't want to put undue stress on the starter.

You need a new fuel pump, don't know about your second question but would guess no.

auto start as in the shut off at stop lights feature? if its the same as the raptors/f150's, there is an extra wire on the positive terminal of the battery, unhook it and no more auto start/stop

The fuel pump assembly typically has a pressure check valve.
Turn the key to Run, but do not crank the starter, wait about 5 seconds while the fuel pump "primes".
Turn the key to Off, repeat @ Run for 5 seconds then Off. Repeat, THEN crank the starter.

If it reliably starts when you prime it 2 or 3X, expect/plan to replace the fuel pump or get used to doing that prime key dance.

As said its the fuel pump. It was a flaw in the pump. My 2017 did this intermittently new and has been doing it while warm steadily for about 3 years now! Makes me pucker but it starts every time!
