I originally posed this in the Superduty forum.... don't know what I was thinking, since most ZF6s are on diesels I believe?
Will a ZF6 on an early build 99 f250 7.3 extended cab with ESOF transfer case easily swap into a 2002 f350 crewcab 7.3 w/manual transfer case? Both are 7.3 engines. Both are long beds (not that I think that matters).
Lots of ZF6 swaps from automatics posts on here, but I haven't seen a 99 ZF6 to anything newer yet.
For anyone wondering why: I just picked up a really decent western 2002 F350 crew cab 7.3 manual transmission, manual transfer case. My early build f250 extcab 7.3 manual transmission ESOF has driven its last mile. Rust has advanced too far on the frame. New to me truck has 112,500 miles. The transmission is balky at R, 1, 2. The transmission in the '99 was rebuilt about 10k ago with upgraded parts and works fabulously. Thus the inquiry.
They will work the same if they are both Zf6 and both diesels.
Ok this is good to know. My concern/paranoia comes from the fact the donor vehicle is a 6/98 build. Now I can't imagine why things like bolt patterns and dimensions would change, but it is true that there were a few changes between early and late build where parts for early build don't fit late and vise versa.

Yes there were changes but none on bellhousing or transfer case.
The zf6 from your e99 is identical to the 2002 as long as they are both 7.3.

100% bolt-in swap. You can put either t-case on as well. Just remove panel in floor and cut carpet/vinyl for shifter on manual t-case. Yes f you’re not using manual shift t-case, I’d like the shifter, brackets, linkages, boot and bezel.

SSJ - I am afraid I will be using the man trans case equipment on the swap. I have never felt fully confident with the ESOF. I was SOL for 3 months during a winter chasing out a prob (between super cold weather or traveling for work).
Anyway, thank you for confirming the ZF6 is a direct swap out for this vintage super duty.
I can't say for sure, but I know as I researching out my question I thought someone mentioned the 5 in a superduty. However, it could have been someone who swapped it in for an auto.
Zf6 only in superduty. There have been people swap in a zf5 cause there cheaper easier to find. But the granny gear is nice if you pull anything heavy.
