Charging system woes
I'll poke around on my truck tomorrow and see if I can spot some easier to reach test points.
Im hoping to god it holds. Maybe it was the fuse link/battery cable/starter relay clean up that fixed it, but I can’t say definitively. Going to continue monitoring.
Truck ran fine for about a month. One day, leaving for a day trip, decided to turn back around after 30 min of driving since I was getting 12.4v (low voltage) on the cigarette lighter volt meter.
Next day all fine. Missed the day trip for nothing. But better than being stuck 3 hours away. 14v all day every day.
Winter has come around. Truck has been starting HARD. I need 6-10 start cycles to get it started in sub20 degree temps. What’s weird is that while starting, it’ll cough and try to start once, and then the starter just spins the flywheel. I get white smoke so I think im getting fuel, but it just won’t ignite. Glow plugs? Glow plug relay?
Two days ago, it was cold. Finally get the truck started after work. sitting in truck on high idle tune to warm it up. Once warm, flip it to +50 tune (the tune I usually drive in). RPM’s dip low then come back to idle (doesn’t usually happen), a few lights come on for a second or two (WTS, SES) and something else I didn’t get to see which light. Drove home fine. Thought this was weird.
yesterday plug in the cigarette lighter volt meter to charge my phone and notice voltage is around 12v. With Lights on air blowing, it’ll sit around 11.94v. Just idling lights off no air, it’ll sit around 12.04v. Engine off key out, I’ll get 12.2v and it will climb to 12.4v or 12.7v.
im stumped. My multimeter is dead so I’ll replace that battery on the way home tonight and start poking around. It seems like the alternator is charging, Otherwise I would imagine the truck would have died by now. Is there a relay that’s staying on? GPR?
any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks y’all.
Then right as i turn onto my block, 13.87v. I’m sitting here looking at it in disbelief.
what in the hell is going on???
is this a tuner program that only kicks the alternator on when it drops below an unacceptable level? I’m so confused.
