Door awning
On our new Lance 1062, it came with an Electric 'Carefree of Colorado' rear awning over the door. It came with a remote FOB that we can't use right now because of the bad wind sensor. It has a wireless Blue Tooth wind sensor in it and began being a PIA at about 4 weeks old. The Blue Tooth wind sensor box is a small black box that sits inside the right end cap of the awning and runs on two itsy bitsy hearing aid batteries. The end cap is not sealed against water intrusion, and neither is this blue tooth wind sensor box.
On ours, we discovered that the batteries in the Wind Sensor were short lived. As they go dead, you get to put up with annoying beeping every few seconds until you change the batteries or shut the awning power switch off. You need a small step ladder and have to take out 4 screws on the end cap to get to the wind senor.
At about 8 months we discovered the little black wind sensor box (about 1"X1") was full of water and the little circuit board was corroded. We've been trying to get it fixed or repaired ever since. In the meantime, we have to run the canopy out and then shut off the switch. It also has to be shut off when retracted. Otherwise, you get to put up with that annoying beep.
It's at the dealer now and and I hope they are now trying to work out a final resolution by having Carefree of Colorado step up and supply and upgraded wind sensor they have come out with that, from what I understand, now runs on AAA battery(s). We'll see how that goes.
Beyond the wind sensor problems, it just developed a problem in the LED strip lights on it. They say there is a burned-out diode, and the entire strip needs to be replaced. Neither of these problems are 'fatal'. Just irritating that the equipment is not working as advertised or paid for and there is an apparent lack of company interest in making it good.
When it comes to wind, it is somewhat weak, so without the win sensor, we usually roll it in when we leave the camper. I've seen it get hit with a 20 mph wind gust and it really buckled and twisted. I was really surprised it wasn't tweaked, warped or damaged, but it did give me a better understanding of why the wind sensor was put on there to start with. So, after that & until we get the wind sensor fixed, the awning gets rolled in if we are not right there to watch it or anytime the wind gets strong enough to put much motion on it.
Manual, spring loaded Carefree Awning. Was too short, did not provide enough coverage extending to the rear of the camper. It was also too narrow, necessitated by the full ladder to the roof.
Carefree Wind Sensor. I understand that this has now been upgraded but I have not seen the new design. I've not had good luck with Carefree Customer Service or the Dealer on this.
Leaks water and corrodes. This thing was only a year old.
Electric Awning on our 2020 Lance Extends much further to the rear of the camper. Carefree support arms are much smaller and weaker than the A&E Awnings, but I'm not sure A&E is available anymore. There are some that are similar to A&E, but not sure of the availability for rear awnings. The wind sensor is housed in the awning endcap picture right.
I wanted some type of roof mount, but apparently back then no one made them, at least for truck born camper units. So, we ended up with what you see in the picture, mounted off center. It was not ideal, too short and you had to be very carefull with adjustments to keep the top of the door from dragging on the canopy.
I like the Lance solution for the ladder stopping short with the hand loops on the roof. It leaves room for a rear awning that has sufficient extension length to be useful.
Just looked up the Northstar's and looked at some pictures. That's a minimal amount of space between the top of the door and the clearance lights.
Have you considered a piece of plastic pipe hose clamped to the ladder of sufficient size to hold a couple of umbrella's?
