Hey all, got a 2002 F-350 with a 7.3 in it. Doesn’t crank.
it’s actually my sisters truck but I figured I’d post here and get some ideas off you all. I’ve had a lot of good advice from these forums before so Here’s to hoping!
we checked both batteries and made sure they were healthy and tight on the posts, also she took the starter out and replaced the solenoid on top of the starter with a new one, she wanted to save money instead of buying another starter which is expensive, especially the quality ones. That’s about as far as she’s got with it. Any diagnostic tips? Multimeter tests I could run? All is appreciated.
Check on the driver side wheel well, there's a small black box where power goes to the cab, sometimes they get corroded and don't allow power.
I have power in the cab everything works in accessory mode, I’ll still check, what exactly in that picture am I looking for? This is a 2002 I believe, it doesn’t have a starter solenoid on the fender well like the older 7.3DI’s
I fairly recently went through some no crank issues myself. I ended up tracking the problem to a dirty/corroded transmission range sensor connector. If that doesn't prove fruitful here's a link to the thread I started at the time. It might help with tracking the signal between the ignition switch and the starter and all the little hoops it gets to jump through to get there.
I agree with hunter. Make sure you have a good starter. Was the old relay bad or was that just a guess? Check the leads to your power cable that runs to the starter. Make sure you are getting power to the relay. Confirm that the relay is working properly. If so then give the starter a couple good wacks with a dead blow hammer while someone is turning the key and see if the starter starts to spin.
Power to the cab but nobody home at the starter. Have you tested with an ohm meter at the main lead to the starter for voltage.
I recently had an aftermarket immobilizer go bad and that caused a no crank issue.
Also there is a grey plug on the automatic trucks which bypasses the clutch lockout switch just behind the fuse access panel.
good to know, The starter solenoid was just a guess, we weren’t sure if it was bad or not. I’ll check the cable lead from the battery to the starter and some of that other stuff and get back to you
Yep, you got a loose or dirty connection either between the battery and starter or the ignition to starter.
I agree, I’ll have to back trace the wires, probably ohm out the battery to starter cable and look at some wiring diagrams. Anyone got a wiring diagram for a 2002 F-350 Lariat? Auto trans 7.3
The wiring stays mostly similar as far as routing and such, so don't worry to much on the specifics. Check the tech section up in the sticky's section. Good bit of info there plus if I remember right there is some of the info in the link from post #6.
