My windshield washer stopped working recently. When pushing the button, the wipers work but the pump does not. The wipers work fine when sensing rain or turned on manually. I checked voltage to the pump while having someone hold the button, and get a measly 0.05 volts. The pump runs strong when I jumper it directly to the battery, so seems to be a relay issue. As I understand it, the relay is integrated in the wiper motor. Before I go replacing parts at random, is there any troubleshooting I can do on the wiper motor to confirm whether it's the motor or switch assembly?
The fuse is good. The pump and wipers share a 30A fuse. Neither would work with a blown fuse, nor would I see an increase in voltage when pressing the button.
have you checked the hoses and fittings under the hood, they are notorious for braking.
The hoses are good. When I connect the pump directly to the battery, I get a strong spray of fluid across the windshield.
The issue seems to lie in whatever relay feeds the pump or possibly a problem in the multifunction switch. I'm inclined to believe the switch is fine, since pushing the button causes the wipers to activate but no pump. What I'm hoping to find is a way to test the relay on the wiper motor rather than throwing parts at the problem. I know I can't repair the relay without replacing the motor, but confirmation that the issue lies in the motor and not the switch would be ideal. Does anyone have the service manual that could maybe post an electrical diagram of how this is supposed to work? I'm guessing that the button on the multifunction stalk grounds a relay in the wiper motor but have no idea what wire that would be.
