I'm building a sub box for my 03 F250 and I need some advice. I was going to build one big box with 2 sealed compartments for 2 JL audio 10s but was wondering if there was any advatages or no no's in making 2 seperate boxes one for each woofer. Would It sound better either way? or is there no difference?. I plan on using 3/4" MDF screw it and glue it together. Then go back make sure its sealed with coulk. Is polyfill worth putting in? This is the first box that I have built any help from some you experienced folk would be excelent!
e-mail me with some spec's for your JL Subs(ie: 10x3, 10w6, 10w6vs, 10w0? Dual Voice coil or single, if dual what Ohm load?), and I will help you design a box. One chamber (Braced) for subs ran mono. two chambers for subs ran by different amps' or in "stereo". aquaholic@charter.net
aquaholic, I droped you an email. I figure you already know this but the 10w0s are single voice coil. If you think I can fit larger drivers in there let me know. I went with the w0's because of there mounting depth but mabye there is more room than I'm acounting for behind the crew cab seats.
heres is a list of materials u'll need:
3/4" sheet of MDF or high quality plywood
Liquid nails (use when putting together and to seal the joints)
1 5/8" course dry wall screws (they do an awsome job)
material to cover (ur choice)
as for the poly fill debate, i didnt notice any difference but for $2.50 a bag @ wal-mart i figured why not.
also check out ur local hardware store or lowes/home depot for a 90 degree holder for making the corners of ur box.
how do u plan on cuttin the material? i know some lowes/home depots will make rought cuts for ya.
i just wanted to say the the above comments are very good, but
the only thing that i would say is that you need to let the liquid nail cure before mounting and paying your subs. i work a stereo shop that used liquid nails for boxes until we had two BLOW UP.
when the liquid nails cures it lets of gases that are flamible. if it cures and the gas escape before mounting then it will be ok. just so you know when i build boxes i like to us commen chamber. if it is sealed tha a little poly fill if air space is small. the smaller the space the more the poly fill. i us no more than 1/2 a bag per 1ft3.
Liquid nails is that something you get at home depot in the hardware isle? Never heard of it, I was planing on using wood glue. Any comments on wood glue?
Wood glue is perfectly fine with MDF. I've used it numerous times. Plain ol' Elmers Wood Glue. Spread it only liberally, screw wood together, then use a moist rag to wipe away any excess. You can use Liquid nails instead, or Gorilla Glue, or Tite Bond.
As far as screws go, I use them, but that's only because I don't have a brad nailer (I'm cheap ). The screws are merely used to hold the box together while the glue dries. The glue will provide a much stronger bond than the screws will. Also, if you use screws, predrill (MDF will split otherwise), drill pilot holes (so the screws are flush when tightened), and make the screws about 4 inches apart. Some people actually weaken the enclosure by using screws every 2 freakin' inches! Remember, they are used merely to hold the box together while the glue dries. Ya' might want to silicone a tiny bead wherever two pieces of wood meet throughout the enclosure to ensure there are no leaks....Hmmm, what else...well, add bracing if you can to. You want that box built like a tank Some people actually prefer doing seperate enclosures because the wall in the middle acts as a very good brace.
Yes, I think that I will have to unbolt the rear seat or at least take the back off to get it in. But its no big deal to remove the seat on an '03, there is just 4 bolts. I see you have an 04 though that might make the mounting a bit different. It will also consume most of the space behind the seat, including removal of the little black tray on the floor. I'm going to velcro the tire tools to the top of the box as that is really the only mod that I have to do. I'm mounting the amp under the rear seat on the driver side. My objective is to have a stealth install and I wanted to do it myself.
I think I'm picking up my 10w0s from a local car audio place for like $75 to $85 a piece. and I plan on ordering a 400 watt RF amp off the internet.
