Well i like the mirrors so much, nice and bright, clear and clean! LOL even the wife says wow your headlights look like crap!
not sure if i want to just replace with oem, or upgrade to led??
Tell me what you think, show me what you have done
The way I see it is this... You have 3 choices for tried and true options going forward. The options are listed below in no particular order and based on details I could recall at the time I wrote this post.
1. 2002 - 2003 clear lens housings, relay harness and 80/100 bulbs. This method has been around for quite a while and had been made popular by the guidance of SkySkiJason over the past several years.
2. A Morimoto LED or HID retro kit with projector lenses. This is by far a superior lighting application, but it carriers a price tag that is "superior" as well. These retro kits have been around for quite a while and I believe Dan V is one of the active FTE'rs that is running a retro kit.
3. Sealed beam custom job like FordTruckNoob accomplished a few years ago, but recently made more popular by Wes444 and validated by runningman777.
In addition to these three choices, there are many more available to you. Enjoy the decision making process and go forward with confidence about your decisions.
I used a aftermarket 05-07 headlight...opened it up, installed the goodies, sealed it back up. Looks like a 05-07 truck. You could use the 99-04 headlight too, I had reason for using the 05-07 though.
I have OE 2003 headlight assy w/ silverstar halogens (or some other name brand non coated capsule) w/ relay upgrade and it works well enough.
I did that in 2010 or so and have done several other lighting upgrades on other vehicles since. I'm not sure if those (2003) housings are capable of really good output without pretty major work (as Dan V has done).
LED tech has come along way, if you decide to go that way do some research and invest in some properly designed modules.
I just put these assemblies in a truck I'm rebuilding, they seem decent but I haven't installed bulbs yet.
I've done both our trucks...each differently, but kind of the same. I installed the older style 2 piece units with the clear lenses on the wife's Excursion. I also installed the newer 1 piece units Harley style lenses on my F350. What I did on both of them is install factory style bulbs that are LED units...plug and play. I think the wife's Excursion may have a slight advantage with the light it throws, but I think it's because her truck is 2wd versus my truck being 4wd. The LED bulbs have been by far the best upgrade I've done on both these trucks and were a good deal at $20 a pop! Both trucks also have the newer front grilles...
I know SSJ hates the LEDs but I’ve been using these for a couple years. Price is decent, decent reviews, and much better than factory lighting. I have yet to be flashed by oncoming traffic even when towing, which happened occasionally with the original bulbs. Just another option.
By the way, I’ve added your mirrors to my Amazon wish list…
