As my 76 Highboy project continues... I’m to the point that I changed the oil in the NP 435 transmission and the NP 205 transfer case. The Transmission seams fine but the transfer case leaks from both output shafts. How hard is it to change the seals and gaskets on these? Do you just pull drive shafts and the yokes off and pull those covers off and replace the seals in them? I’ve never worked on one of these NP 205’s.
following. I'm in the process of doing the same, except mine's a NP203.
I bought a gasket/seal kit and there are multiple seals. I'll need to pull the drive shaft/yolks off and pay attention to what comes off, as there are different seals in the kit. my gaskets are leaking as well, so i'll be tearing apart quite a few things.
I've heard a old time medchanic refer to leaks as continuous duty cycle lube changes.
lmao...
I've had both my 435 and 205 rebuilt not too long ago. The builders missed some debris on the front shaft yoke and lo-n-behold, it leaked like a sieve. My mechanic ended up simply pulling the yoke out and replacing the seat after cleaning the surface of any remaining debris. So long story short - yeah, you should be able to yank the yoke, replace the seal and put it all back.
Well I ordered a gasket set and the seals so I’ll start working on it in the morning... parts should be here in the afternoon. Hopefully all goes well.
